OK, so if no heir to Smitty is in our draft plans, or in the draft at all, then FA is critical

LaFell is an excellent WR3. To me, that's what he is. Last January I would have said that he has the possibility of being a consistent WR2, but that was last year. Last year we thought that he was rising up and developing into what we wanted. He was poised to break out, remember? We had to suffer through that argument. He was Dat Deal! We almost believed that perhaps LaFell was that real deal once the season began when LaFell had some hopeful performances, but then LaFell began to disappear during not only stretches of games, but entire games. The thing is that you may argue that perhaps coaching was at fault, but even when we began to turn the corner from losses to victories, LaFell was consistently LaFell (which is not to say is a bad thing). If LaFell can disappear when he is playing with a WR1 who is a legend, what do you think would happen to him if he became a WR1 without the legend? He is not that guy. He is just not (and neither are any of the other WR3s that have seen the field during the regular season).

It would be prudent of us to address this need in the draft or FA---regardless of cap issues. If we have to wheel and deal and jettison some overvalued vets and bring in or develop younger and/or cheaper players who can do the job, then you better prepare yourselves because that's what Gettleman said in so many words. If we are to succeed, and do it with brevity, all the needs will have to be addressed one way or another. That's what makes championship teams and dynasties, not offering up excuses and half-stepping.

Those guys may not be much different in their 40 time, but they are better at this stage of their careers in creating separation. Add in that guys like Fitz are expert in using their bodies to wall off defenders.

Obviously, many great receivers weren't speedsters (see Jerry Rice) but they had other attributes that in essence made them play faster than their 40 times.

Maybe Brandon will surprise me and develop those skills. I just haven't seen anything yet to suggest he will do it.

That was my point. Lafell isn't ready to be a #1 today but he has developed. But it's not his size and speed that holds him back.

He should be a great #2 next year and with 2 more years opposite smitty he can be a #1

The teams that made the SB and most in the playoffs know how to utilize most to all of their players on offense.

They spread things out, have a diverse set of skill players, and on the other side have a good enough defense to crank out wins.

With us, we have dynamic players on offense but haven't used them correctly. We have basically 2 wideouts in Smitty and LaFell, Olsen at TE, sometimes use Tolbert correctly, and Stewart/Williams constantly hot and cold with an ever fluctuating o-line. This will cause troubles for Cam and the whole team when it comes to closing out games. FA is critical regardless because we have more holes than some let on imo. Its gonna be interesting to see how Gettleman maneuvers through this offseason.

Better work some restructuring magic if we are going FA

i'm sure there will be some done...enough for us to be a little active.

it won't be high profile guys he goes for and there won't be any first day FA activity going on which will piss off a lot of people.

that's ok, tho, because he's not someone that goes after the big money high profile guys. he is essentially an expert in finding hidden gems. i'm pretty sure it's even written on his resume like that.

That's fine. Fit's in with our philosophy all along.

lol

lol you funny man........but are you watching the senior bowl practices.....patton lit it up today. best robert alford deep for a td, then he faked on a route and got open....finally alford tried to jam at the line and patton still got open on a slant and held on to the ball when he tried to strip him..

this dude looks like the most complete wr in this draft to me. terrance williams seems like he depends on speed only like d. jackson.......king is also a very good route runner....

we got to get a wr help out smith and lafell out boy....lol i have nothing against them.....
