OK, so if no heir to Smitty is in our draft plans, or in the draft at all, then FA is critical

I do too but if you think Patton is the answer then you just have a man crush.

yeah but thats the thing its not only patton.....allen,rodgers,hunter,patterson,hopkins and williams all are potential top flight wr.

i was just using one example. i dont have man crush on anyone...but thise team needs a true no 1 wr real bad. lol

I like O-Line or best available (excluding QB/RB) with the 14th pick or even trade up.

WR with our 2nd round pick is OK if there is a guy who is overlooked but really BPA again is probably the best idea.

None of the WRs stand out to me. Justin Hunter could be our AJ Green type payer but he has already torn an ACL. We will have plenty of third string WRS to battle in camp and if Gettis gets out of whatever doghouse he is in he could be solid. And Lafell will be our solid second. I also don't see why LaFell can't develop into our lead WR

i think i still want some combo of WR and FS in the first couple rounds.

i'd like the issues on the OL to be taken care of with vets so we don't have to keep on watching rookies on the OL look like they are on roller skates for a couple years.

if the pressure is on to win this season, we can't afford to let the OL be in another developmental phase.

we need to draft early guys that can contribute at a high level right out of the gate and that usually isn't interior DL or OL.

I don't see LaFell ever becoming a #1 receiver. He doesn't have the speed to consistently get behind defenders or the moves to create separation. I love him as a big play #3 guy, but that's about it.

Now, before anyone talks about the times LaFell got behind defenders for big plays, those were instances in which he didn't draw enough attention. Take Smitty off the field and see how often it happens.

None of this is to disparage LaFell. It is instead intended as an honest appraisal of what he is and can become.

I never thought Lafell's speed was the issue. From a size and speed standpoint he is Dwayne Bowe. Lafell's issues were concentration and hands which he fixed in 2012. He would have been a first rounder if not for those

He can't beat Smitty in a footrace but plenty of guys with his frame and speed are #1 receivers in the NFL. Bowe, Dez Bryant, Crabtree, Fitzgerald come to mind. While it's fun to have a guy who can run a 4.4 forty it's not a requirement.

Those guys may not be much different in their 40 time, but they are better at this stage of their careers in creating separation. Add in that guys like Fitz are expert in using their bodies to wall off defenders.

Obviously, many great receivers weren't speedsters (see Jerry Rice) but they had other attributes that in essence made them play faster than their 40 times.

Maybe Brandon will surprise me and develop those skills. I just haven't seen anything yet to suggest he will do it.
