Article on Jerry Richardson's Succession Plans

First of all, this article is bullshit to sell this to us better. "no no we have to pay this so after richardson sells the team the new owner won't want to move them to LA." If that were so important to him he could cut a check. Don't buy this for a second.

Regarding succession, keep in mind that there are other owners of this team, some of them with very deep pockets. I would be very surprised that if there's another majority owner, it didn't come from inside the group already owning the team.

The other, fun possibility is that someone with ties to the NFL buys in. The Panthers have been very successful within league politics bringing out their former player/owner, and richardson really love him the ties to the North East.

Unless Brad Johnson has become a millionaire and I didn't notice, there aren't really any other NC based players in a position to buy the team. CURTIS MARTIN ON THE OTHER HAND....

Good grief man. If you want the Panthers to stay in Charlotte long term then you need to pay up but not because JR would move them. But who might buy them may move them especially since there would be practically nothing that the city of Charlotte could do to stop it. Charlotte is blessed to have the 11th most valuable sports team in the world calling it home. The Panthers have brought Charlotte more money then it's ever taken from it. If JR was only about the money he would have moved the team to LA already. It's been documented that LA has wanted the Panthers and tried to sell JR on it. JR is giving Charlotte an awesome deal. In today's NFL market 125 million on stadium upgrades is chump change, especially since it was privately funded to begin with. But this deal is not about the upgrades....it's about selling a portion of the team to the city so it can't move after he dies. Look at the cost of the new Met Life stadium, or the Cowboys stadium. JR would not need money from Charlotte if this deal was only about stadium grades especially 125 million. He would have made more money paying for them himself and then selling the team.

It's just getting frustrating seeing all this hate on JR. He's an old school gentlemen that loves where he's from. He's never once has done anything to make us question is morality and ethics. He's a good owner. Like every man, he doesn't always make the right choices. But overall the man appears to be without a lot of ego and seems quite honorable.

It would have been more honorable had he divulged these succession plans before the city's vote passed, not THE DAY AFTER.

If he wants to keep the team in Charlotte having a plan including his family and demanding it be bought by a local would be honorable. Making sure it just changes hands within 2 years of his death doesn't seem that honorable. I don't get where people think this is so great, unless you live in LA.

I'm shocked that nobody has brought this up yet

Everyone is hoping the new owner will be good for the team and that they'd keep us here, don't you think that JR is also working on finding the best possible owner for this team at the same time?

If his plan is to have it sold so quickly after his death, I'm sure he's also put plenty of feelers out there to see who would be interested and has started working on them. You don't just up and buy an NFL team, I'm sure it takes plenty of time to work on buying an NFL team in most cases anyways.

True, but the problem is JR dosent know when JR is gonna kick the bucket. I dont think he really cares what happens to the team when he dies. If he was willing to put forth the effort to ensure the team stays here, why wouldnt he disclose the details to us? It could only be seen a positive and help to restore some of lost faith and damage to his name he's suffered among the fanbase and community. If he cared, why would he not put everyone at ease by announcing his plan rather than saying "NFL, the team must be sold within 2 years of my passing"? Hell, he already knows that NC\SC will do whatever necessary to keep the team here...

WTF is his problem since getting the heart transplant? Ppl need to open their eyes and realize that he has changed!

JR is one of those ppl that only cares about you if he has a personal relationship with you, like the one he has with members of his organization (Olsen, 89, Jake, TD). If he dosent know you personally, he will quickly look down his nose at you like you dont deserve common respect (fans - 0 communication and providing a subpar product, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Jim Harbaugh, media).

You people shitting on JR disgust me on so many levels.

He's not God. And coming off our 4th straight losing campaign with him being the one constant, it should be expected. It disgusts me JR puts profit over giving fans competitive football. This is the guy that firesold his team over a work stoppage. Then turned around and raised ticket prices. Now hes shaking the city down for more money. If he won more maybe people would call out his greed as much.

You're not "calling out" jackshit. You're on a goddamn message board accusing a man whose team is $16 million over the salary cap of being cheap.

You might want to look at how a salary cap works. Just because he is $16M over the cap does not mean his is paying $140M this year. Also there's a minimum that they have to spend.

Salary cap is a fixed cost. How much extra has he spent on coaches? Scouting? Dude kept his flukey Hurney as GM for how long? He's el cheapo and runs his business as such. You guys get defensive cuz you know he sucks. The best thing you can say was "he got us a team". Losing is his culture.
