my hope all along is that we'd fill holes with vets and then focus on BPA in the draft.

prior to gettleman getting the gig i wanted us to trade every pick after the 2nd round for vet players just to make sure we use those picks on people who can make an immediate impact. of course the cap situation made that really hard to do.

i trust gettleman's ability to spot talent, though. i think he'll make the staff (mainly the scouting department) here better one way or another. he mentioned giving the the tools they need to do the job better and i'm thinking that may be referring to some of the data-analytics software that is being used by some scouting departments in the league.

Speaking of free agency, this article by Aaron Wilson (ravensinsider on Twitter) caught my attention

Ravens might not be able to keep three young defenders

Gonna pay attention to how Cary Williams does this weekend. Like what I see of Paul Kruger but we don't really have a hole at that position unless we lose someone.

i think in order of best out of those three it goes ellerbe, kruger, williams and it terms of what we need it goes williams, ellerbe, kruger. good find though. Having to give a contract to flacco is a must for them. atleast one of those guys of the three is gone

pretty interesting, but he did mention that williams turned down a 3 year/$15mil extension prior to the season. could be he's anticipating doing better than that when he hits FA.

i think that gamble's cap hit this next year is about $11mil next year but cutting him would still cost $8mil. if we pick up any CB to replace him, paying anything more than $3mil would essentially be more costly than keeping gamble. williams might just be out of our price range.

Not true. We can save around $8 mil by cutting him.

As to the poll, it's really too early to tell. We need to see what Gettleman does to get us under the cap in March before we know our needs in the draft. While drafting for need is never ideal, we may not have much choice this year.

yeah, i may have that backwards thinking about it.

so that gives us quite a bit more to play with at CB in replacing him, but there's a whole lot more work that would need to be done cap wise than just cutting gamble. i'd hate to use a significant amount of the money saved by cutting gamble on another CB. that may be what needs to happen, tho.

I agree with those who say we need to wait to see who gets cut and who we pick up in free agency before the draft. We might have needs in areas not considered a problem right now or we might fill some of the need positions in free agency. Much of this also depends on where various players are projected. For example everyone wants to go OG because of Warmack but most every early poll has him going well before the 14th pick. Would we want the third best OG at 14 versus the best WR or the third DT versus the best cornerback available.
