Gettleman: "If the ink is dry and you aren't happy, you did something wrong"

I don't think he is talking about those rare ones where hindsight really comes into play.

Delhomme's deal wasn't bad in hindsight. It was bad when we offered it to him.

DeAngelo and Stewart both being signed isn't bad in hindsight....no team in NFL history has done such a thing (and all those other team in the history of the league didn't have a mobile QB and a FB who is a really a RB on board). Comes down to touches simply not being there regardless of OC.

Anderson/Godfrey/etc are just overpaid....hindsight doesn't make that so.

Most of the obvious bad deals are "justified" here using fan logic. We like them....therefore try to rationalize why we blantenty overpay or focus on one spot

delhomey, i'll give you.

but as to dwill and jstew, "no team[mates] in NFL history" rushed for the amount of yards they have. from 2008-2011 they have been no. 1 and 2 respectively at yards per attempt in the league.

anderson can easily be worked around. godfrey, too.

it's just a simple statement trying to pack too much of a punch.

On the topic, it tells me he's gonna be really careful about signing contracts rather than just throwing money at whomever has an above average season.

...and/or is a guy we drafted.

probably the biggest difference i see right off the bat is a shift from hurney's "we don't let talented players leave" mindset.

gettleman's philosophy is, "if you get expensive and are replaceable, you will be replaced."

Bradshaw would have got his wish if Hurney was in NY....Jacobs probably would still be a Giant as well. Osi wouldn't of pouted either

hind sight is 20/20. pretty dumb statement in my opinion.

I disagree.....sounds like he may be more thoughtful about some of those big contracts.

So many bad contracts on the books probably much easier just to identify the good ones.

Obviously you start with Cam Newton and thank our lucky stars he was the frist #1 in the Rookie wage scale era. Bad news, 2015 Free Agent

Kuechly a baragin for the same reason.

Steve Smith's contract is good although he'll never see the 2015, 2016 portion of it at least in its current config.

Then there's.....and.... uhmm.

Also, if you look at Bradshaw, Jacobs, Ward, etc from his era in NY ( I think they where Earth, Wind, and Fire about the same time Double Trouvle emerged)....he will let certain positions simply walk or take reasonable money to stay. NYG ain't about paychecks to RBs

Ward hit the FA market after rushing for 1000 as a backup.

That's how you do it.

I like what Gettleman said but am waiting to see how it plays out. Do you expect him to say that we are going to overspend for players and throw money around like there is no tomorrow. Too many times I bought the hype only to be disappointed when it came down to it. I can't wait to see all the bitching when we let popular people go and not replace them with big names because we got outbid by others.

You are giving him too much credit by referring to contracts on the rookie scale. Second contracts are where he killed us (as you point out). He guaranteed so much $$ that we cannot get out of them. Players have no incentive to perform at a high level. It was as if Peppers convinced him that others wanted out too, so he desperately felt that he had to overpay current players. He did not go free agent for the same reason: who wants to come here? SO he overpaid Panthers and found free agents at the bottom of the barrel. You gotta believe in the product or you cannot sell it.

funny, that's my whole perspective on whether or not to have faith in rivera after yet another strong finish, but anyways....

agreed that we probably won't see him go after big name guys to replace favorites...that's not exactly how he does the job and if people listened to him he essentially said how it would be.

we are more likely to sign people to fill in holes to one year deals than anything. he said that the UFA market is pretty big and the salary cap is flat so there just isn't going to be the huge contracts for very many people. if they want jobs, they are going to have to settle for one year deals and i think that's where we are going to be active in free agency.

it also won't be big name guys or guys we've heard of either. his biggest gift was in recognizing talent that others had overlooked. i think even with his talents as a talent evaluator, there were probably some players that he thought deserved a shot that his bosses didn't bite on so here he might appreciate being the one that makes those calls.

i'm curious to see what he does, almost as curious as i am to see people's reaction to the guys he cuts, the guys he doesn't pick up and overpay for, and the "no-name scrubs" he brings in to fill holes.

i expect to see a whole lot of "you mean THE Joe Schmo?" and "championship!" comments.

Yes! This is the point I was trying to make. By building the franchise from the bottom up, you are positioning yourself to have quality depth and limit the situations where players have the upper hand.

I never got the feeling that Marty took the undrafted free agents very seriously, nor the PS. I bet that changes soon.

Yeah, we are going to struggle mightily simply to get the contracts we have under control and minimize the cuts just to get under the cap.

If Getts finds some extra next year from some FA action that will be a bonus.

With a flat cap and the rookie wage scale in place all those extra #1s the Rams now have from the RGIII deal should set them up nicely .....if they don't fug it up.

#1 picks are the new gold standard me thinks.
