Very cool trip PhillyB. I traveled with my family to Quepos (very touristy, my parents are older folk, non-adventurous), as well as the capital San Jose. My mother and I ventured into the village and had a blast talking with the locals with language barrier. Reminded me of that episode of Louie when he visits China looking for the Yangtze River. It gave me great perspective on life. I was 19 at the time. We were in Quepos when a hurricane hit. The levee broke, drove a car blasting Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Break's" trying to get out of Quepos to the nearest airport with major flooding.

I quoted that passage because I wanted some advice about my road trip coming up in a couple of months since you are a traveler of sorts. Have you ever traveled across America? I'm planning a cross country trip from NC to Cali. I've been debating the southern or northern route with my friends. I have a friend in Montana and one in Western Texas. I'm leaning towards the northern route through parts of Wyoming, Montana, then down through Oregon. I think it would be the most scenic route as opposed to the southern route through Texas. What do ya think?

you didn't ask me but that area of the country is stunning. you can't go wrong in montana... one of the most beautiful places in the world imo. Go to Glacier... it'll blow your mind.

Yea that's what I'm thinking. As cool as I thinking driving across the Texan desert would be. It would get old pretty fast. My buddy in Montana goes to UM in Missoula for grad school. Said Montana is amazing. I also wanna go the northern route so I can go to the Redwood National Park in North Cali then down to the Bay area.

yea, driving down through california from the north is great... drive the 1 in cali... One of the most beautiful roads in the country. Big Sur is worth a stop if you get down that far south... Also, crossing the cascades and going from scrubland to rain forest in washington is pretty amazing. Beautiful country out that way...

Yea I vaguely remember traveling on it with my parents when I was 6 or 7. But they still talk about how amazing it was. I have some family in Washington and Oregon I can stay with when sleeping in my car gets old, so this seems to be the best route to take. Not sure about Big Sur yet. I'm gonna be living in the Bay Area and probably by that point I will want to rest up. But that is a place i wanna go see eventually.

I took 40 to Cali once through Tennessee, Ark, Okl, Tex, NM, Ariz. once you get through Tenn (which is basically the same as NC), you have flat farmlands then desert. The desert was actually pretty cool because I have never been in that region, but Arkansas through Texas was brutal. I would recommend the Northern route hands down.

I drove from CA to NC with my brother once. We took 40 all the way. The desert was really cool, esp. the Painted Desert, but once you go past NM and head into TX/OK its pretty boring.
