This Throw Shows What Cam Can Become With Consistency

It was a PERFECT throw.... but it had to be. You don't want him throwing into double coverage. If the velocity is even slightly lower it's an easy pick. If he let it sail slightly up the field it's a pick. If he placed it just as well but the velocity was down again, Smith gets killed. There were a ton of things that could have gone wrong on that throw.

When you watch the best QB's throw, they tend to find open targets.... not make them with ball placement. I want to see Cam get better at hitting open WR before we start throwing his name into the conversation for Top 10.

Every top QB throws into tight coverage from time to time. Usually it works. Sometimes not. But they all, without exception, do it.

Cam has made a lot of perfect throws. When all his mechanics are set he is great. Just needs to be consistent. Of course that comes with experience reps, proper coaching and a scheme designed to take advantage of not just his skill set but the pieces around him(from O-line to WRs)

My favorite throw from Cam actually came last year on another throw to Smitty in a game v Washington. Incredible accuracy.(click to 3:06)

The biggest problem Cam has is playing under pressure. When the heat is on he reverts to his instincts rather than learned mechanics. I think that is part of why he struggled early. Once we were out of the playoffs the pressure to win was off for him. The great QBs can stay cool in the pocket under any circumstance. Cam can leave the pocket and gain 10 yards but that hurts his development as a passer when 10 yards isn't enough in the 4th quarter.

No offense to anyone currently slobbering over that play... But it really wasn't anything special. A simple pitch and catch. The coverage was horrible. Neither defender looked to be within 5 yds of Smitty when he made the catch.

I was expecting some spectacular. I found it to be rather pedestrian and vanilla. I've seen way better throws from Cam on many different occasions

Edit: I'm referring to the OP

Cam Newton can make throws that very few QBs can make. Even some top shelf NFL QBs.

He reminds me of Brett Favre in the regard.

That is what gets me excited (in my bathing suit area) about Cam. He could be a guy that throws like Favre and runs like Cunningham.

TCF, the defender was in Smith's hip pocket the whole way. He only looks like he's off of him because Steve breaks into his route. When Smith secures the catch the defender has his arms on him. It only looks like he's wide open because that pass was perfectly on time, which exactly the point I was making. This is not a simple throw by any stretch of the imagination, and for Cam to make it look easy says a lot about his skill. If you can't get excited at that kind of pass than I'm afraid the more Cam grows into an elite quarterback the less excited you're going to be, because that was f*cking money.

that's an extremely tough throw that requires ridiculous arm strength and accuracy to hit. note how the ball follows a perfect trajectory that arches over the shallow defender and drops into smith's hands in stride. it's a bullseye in a window that's maybe two feet wide.

a weaker pass and it's behind smith and picked off. too much heat and it flies out of bounds in front of steve. slightly inaccurate and it could be either. do you realize how hard it is to make a deep out route look "pedestrian and vanilla"?

What is really annoying is that I remember dozens of throws from this past year that would've been incredible completions if they weren't dropped balls.

If we can get a big receiver with good hands, there will be some ridiculous throw and catches next year....

Isn't that David Gettis? And don't forget he's a burner...
