Another exceptional post from one of the worst posters on this board.

Don't u have some Akron Zips players to "scout" on YouTube?

the guys got a much higher percentage of pie than you do for the number of posts made.

I'd love for the Panthers to start using that sort of "pre-emptive apprenticeship" structure that the Giants and some others use. It's good strategy both in the office and on the roster.

Good writeup by the way. I'd agree with those suggestions. The org chart is definitely in need of some changes.

absolutely. Which beats having a department head with no one under him.

Seriously.

Carpanfan96 mentioned that Hurney was essentially a "handle everything myself" kind of guy. I have a feeling that's not what Gettleman wants to be. His experience with the Giants would point to just the opposite.

Great work, Mr. Scot. Seems like Harriss, like Sternfield for Gettleman, is Abrams' theoretical replacement as an assistant GM, but if Abrams isn't leaving, maybe we can grab him. That'd be great.

guys are going to hire who they know. People will have to get over that, and for the most part understand that familiarity with the other guy (and a common system) is more important than hiring random name that a fan recognizes.

I don't give any credence to the Abrams or Ross idea. I don't see them losing their executive scouts (I read that as national scouts), but maybe a few of the scouts will be up for grabs for a promotion to national.

I did a similar workup here: it's more generic, but gives some reasons why I would want them to do these things.

good write up.

regarding cap guys, generally there's a specialist who handles that, but I do feel like guys with a pro personnel background have more experience in valuation. College guys grade, and the grade turns to a board. But pro guys have to give input on veterans that will have a value in the marketplace, and on internal guys who already make an amount of money.

They'll have someone who does that, but I don't think it'll specifically be a weakness.

I go into that a bit above, but yes, I imagine they would. They've dealt with outside analysis before, and that's fine. I think that could become a standard in the same way that teams share scouting info from BLESTO or National Scouting. But some of that has to be crunched internally, proprietary information that you can't also get by having $30 worth of membership to PFF.

Yea, Hurney was a do it self type of Guy. That's one of the reasons he was considered a grinder and hard worker by many. Same thing with Beane. They both handled multiple jobs that most teams have 12 or so people doing. Take a look at the Panther's front office and compare it to other teams.

http://www.azcardina...am/staff.html - they have 11 people handling personnel decisions... Scouting, trades...ext.

http://www.panthers....team/staff.html - Hurney and a the two directors handled pretty much everything when it came to personnel decisions and so forth. They have scouts that aren't listed, but Hurney pretty much took everything into his own hands. He'd personally scout for most of the season, he was everywhere during the off season looking at players. He took a lot of responsibility off of his head scouts that he didn't need too.

http://www.giants.com/team/staff.html - They have a similar front office, but they have about a dozen scouts handling and a more structured organization.

Could go on and on, but like I said expect a couple of additional positions under Gettleman here in the Carolina Front Office.

Not arguing that other teams use more people than the panthers do, but obviously those websites just publicly list more positions than the panthers do. (The panthers have more than 1 athletic trainer for example). I'm sure there are plenty of scouts that work for the panthers and aren't listed just like other departments only list the directors.
