Do you think the new GM signing will get this franchise beyond 2nd place?

if more teams decided not to pursue FAs because a few didn't work out then maybe they'd suck as bad as we have overall lately

Oh yes, because Packers, Steelers, Ravens, Saints (and don't say Brees; a quarterback is pretty much an exception and even then, it took them awhile to get to the SB with Brees and them getting Sharper is no different than us bringing in Olsen), Giants, Seahawks, and 49ers are all known for picking up FAs nonstop. And before you mention "oh well 49ers signed manningham, moss alsd" those guys have hardly had much of an impact on their team and they did just fine without them. Even Falcons were built mostly through the draft. They were doing just fine before they traded for Samuels and them trading for Gonzalez isn't any different than us trading for Olsen, except Gonzalez was probably better (at the time, anyway).

You use FA to fill holes you may have after the draft, which we did (ala Dwan Edwards, trading for Greg Olsen, Ron Edwards, Hangartner even though he now sucks, Nakamura even though he sucks but it isn't like there was another safety out there and only DB we could have gotten was Samuels). But you build your team up through the draft. It isn't JR's fault Hurney was incapable of doing just that his final 3 years here (his '11 draft was horrific sans Cam).

But you are probably one of the ones who wanted to dump money for Mario Williams. He sure made that Bills squad better. Or maybe Aso? Yeah, Aso made Eagles better.

The huge issue with signing big name free agency players is, and Aso is a GREAT example, is due to the change of scheme. These guys were great but were great in one scheme. Sometimes you'll run into someone who flat out isn't a fit for the scheme you have already been implementing and Aso is a pure man corner, not someone who should be playing in zone. That is why a lot of FAs don't work out. And who says we won't be more active in FA with a different GM? Not big name guys but guys such as, say Pollard who isn't great but is solid? Guys like that.

This site though just seems to think if one thing happens here, it is guaranteed to happen again.

we were one of three teams to finish 7-9 in the division and somehow managed to be considered 2nd in the division.

let's all hang our hats on being the best 7-9 losing team in the division.

Clearly that is what I said.

I just find it funny people refuse to look at the positives on this team. Lets ignore we have a potential 10yr starter at QB who had the best first 2 years (outside of Dan Marino) of any quarterback in NFL history. Lets ignore we have a potentially elite MLB in Kuechly, an important position in the NFL (just like at any great MLB and then look how good their defense is; hell, just look at how much better our defense got when Luke went to middle). Lets ignore we have 2 damn good pass rushers. Lets ignore how great we looked in the final 6 games. This team is young but has talent. Yet people don't care about it. Some of you just want to focus on the bad.

I've never once said we're guaranteed for anything. I've only said that to act as if, which this thread is pointing out, we're simply incapable of getting higher than 2nd in the division is absolutely ridiculous. Even at our most inconsistent, we finished 2nd despite one of the leagues toughest schedules. So come on now. I'm simply saying people need to stop being so damn shortsighted.

Yeah because the mood on the board is mad delirium we finished 7-9 and everyone thinks that finishing second with a losing record was terrific............

the bad is what is holding this team back.

the bad has kept this team from having winning seasons.

i am not satisfied with almost winning.

i want crap fixed. i want this team to quit settling for "potential" and coming close.

until we have a winning season we are a losing team. my believing in the team isn't going to change the fact that all this team has been able to do is show is can almost win and thats nothing to be proud of, imo.

the standard for me is win games when it counts. when that is accomplished it will be to have a winning season and a trip to the playoffs. after that it's two winning seasons in a row and the playoffs. after that it's the conference championship and a trip to the superbowl.

i'm done making excuses or trying to shine a turd. until this team can win, that's all that is being done.

I never said be satisfied with almost winning.

My point has nothing to do with being satisified with one or the other. My point is this thread and some of the people in it are being ridiculous. They are acting like the past = future. They are acting as if we'll suck forever. They are ignoring the strengths of this team and only focusing on the bad and acting as if it will be that way forever. All I'm saying is to stop acting like that is the case. I've said this many times already but we have a soon to be great QB in place (really all you need, build around him), a MLB who looks like he'll be awesome for years and two great pass rushers. We have the major pieces in place. We just need a GM to build around it and a head coach to coach it up. Does it happen? Who knows. Maybe not. But maybe it does. That is all I'm saying. Yet people in this thread are acting like we're doomed forever. It's ridiculous logic.

I've not once told you to accept mediocrity.

That's 4 players. You think all we need is four good players to succeed? LOL
