Questions about Marc Ross

Rooney rule is a joke, but Ross is a Princeton guy(smart) plus a great communicator and organizor.has experience scouting college guys so i really dont know why he cannot get a GM job.i do think some of those interviews where based off the rule.

Not sold on Ross one bit. I think a lot of people are infatuated with him simply for the reason that he is a part of the giants organization and he has a cool sounding name (means more than you'd think). I'm fine with people from the Giants organization, but even though they've won two super bowls I still don't consider them an elite team. They either don't make the playoffs or barely sneak in - and yes their Dline can completely shut down elite quarterbacks but outside of that they are a swiss cheese defense and a one dimensional offense (for the most part).

Someone posted recent drafts for the Giants and for the most part it is not a good success rate. Sure they find scrubs who can contribute or even break out, but these guys aren't being drafted (Cruz and Stevie Brown are the obvious big names here) and thus has nothing to do with Ross or the GM for that matter. It's Coughlin saying "hey guys go get me a bunch of scrubs at these positions and i'll see what I can make with them". Rivera does the same thing (maybe not as well, but he's only had 2 years so we'll see). If a guy has a college scouting background and it is his current job within the organization then I'd be much more comfortable with someone who has a better resume in the draft.

I was having problems with the huddle on my phone a few days ago when i had a similar thought. If ross's main issue as experience then pay him and gettleman a lot of money and when gettleman retires ross is right there to take over. Unless we continue to suck, in which case theyre both fired!!!

It's a dream scenario. Unfortunately, probably a pipe dream scenario :lol:

If we somehow manage to get both, I'll shave my head.

I think i'd rather have the dude from the Packers to be honest. they're a more consistent playoff team right now than the Giants who, as mentioned above, either miss the playoffs or barely sneak in

Ideally I'd also want John Dorsey from the Packers, but I think he's going to be in KC shortly. He's supposedly one of Reid's close friends, can't see him passing on that job. Although with Reid having full control, he may want to have some degree of autonomy rather than just be a puppet...

Yeah, I don't think we have a realistic shot at Dorsey. Doubt I'll even profile him unless that changes.

Gettleman is still my first choice based on experience, but I'd definitely be happy with Ross.

Whomever winds up as GM, it's vital that we get a good cap guy in to work with them. Our current crop of candidates is all guys with little to no experience at managing the cap.

Right, but im sure his scouting reports heavily influence the Giant's draft (if they don't then it seems the Giants don't trust him or respect his opinion... so why should we) and the giants just have too many guys taken in rounds 2-4 who contribute nothing or get cut in a year or two. These are the rounds that we need to capitalize on.

I'd rather have a guy that influences the drafts of say the Packers, Steelers or Ravens.

One point that ought to be made regarding Ross, specifically about his youth.

While he is indeed the youngest candidate for the Panthers GM job, he's actually tied for the second most experience working as a scout.

Dave Gettleman - 25 years scouting experience

Marc Ross - 16 years scouting experience

George Paton - 16 years scouting experience

Lake Dawson - 12 years scouting experience

Dawson is actually a few years older than Ross, but hasn't been in the scouting game for quite as long.

The two main criteria the Panthers were said to be looking for in a new GM were someone "up and coming" (i.e. no retreads) and someone with a strong scouting background. Out of that group, only Dave Gettleman has more experience than Ross.

Youth doesn't necessarily equal inexperience.

this is true. it is possible Ross suggested players that turned out to be stellar and the GM ignored his recommendation. i won't be displeased with getting Ross as our GM I'd just feel a lot more comfortable with a guy who has shown the ability to build depth throughout a team. We don't need star power, we are littered with enough playmakers - we need guys who are NOT liabilities when we put them on the field.
