A Gross Display

Had the Panthers had nearly any quarterback other than the ultra-mobile Cam Newton at the helm on Sunday, the results could have been much different; because as good as their run blocking was, their efforts in pass protection were awful. The Panthers allowed pressure on 17 of Newton’s 36 dropbacks, with most of the pressure coming from their tackles. RT Byron Bell (-1.7) was beaten for five pressures on the day, but on the opposite side, Jordan Gross (-4.7) was even worse, allowing six hurries and two hits on his QB. Gross especially struggled with the speed of OLB/DE Martez Wilson on the outside, who played just 11 snaps, but beat the Panther’s LT for three third-down pressures.

So Gross was pretty much beat by anyone that lined against him.

The argument for not drafting an OT because we have Gross is just like the argument people had about drafting a #1 wr or bringing a bigtime free agent one in because of Steve Smith. You still do not have a replacement for either one and Gross has way less tread left on the tires. If we draft a Tackle high we could let him start at right side or move Gross to right. I wouldn't mind us following San Fran a couple years back and drafting 2 olineman with our first 2 picks. Or drafting one and a good free agent. It's not exciting but it will be when our running game becomes dominant again, which helps our defense , and Cam stops getting murdered. If he was RG3's size he would not have lasted the season.
