Chud is optimistic about the offense per Panthers.com

Max Henson on Panthers.com gave an update on Panthers.com. "In this offense, we are going to create big plays," Chudzinski said, evidenced by Carolina's no. 1 ranking in yards per pass attempt and 75 plays of 20 yards or more.

"Where Cam grew the most from just a quarterback standpoint is managing the game, being able to string some plays that gain 3, 4, 5 yards with those big plays. Not turning the ball over, making smart decisions, throwing the ball away when he needs to, checking it down, getting the ball out of his hands – he made strides with all those things.

Last year and this year are totally different as I alluded to in the Kelly thread.

Say what you want, but Cam was still a neophyte at the beginning of the season, and his "sophomore slump" proved it. Once the light clicked on for Cam (and Rivera and Chud), the not so mysterious Cam was as unstoppable as an NFL QB can be, even though seasoned defenses had an entire off-season to prepare for him. To me this bodes well for the future. Last year we were banking on fool's gold, this year we saw a team really go through it---with the pressure on---and succeed. Everyone, especially the players, could have packed it in by mid-season and tanked, but that didn't happen. This past season may appear to be like last season on the surface, but it was different in so many key ways.

I'll be optimistic when Chud is fired

I don't yet know what to think of Chud. Sometime he looks like a genius, and other times he looks like an armchair OC. He may be too smart for his own good. Sometimes Chud is so cute that he is ugly, and that reflected on the offense, especially the first half of the season. Maybe he has learned a few lessons, and hopefully this will keep him and the offense moving in the right direction.

Panthers.com interviewing Rob Chudzinski about the future of the offense is another one of those "subtle hints" that make me wonder.

i'm not wondering. i'm pretty confident that rivera will be back. i'll be shocked if he isn't. i may not think it's for the best, but i still think it's going to happen and by the time TC gets around i'll probably be on the bandwagon, but this time around i'm going to be a bit more skeptical of rivera and chud because i don't trust him or chud to continue what they've done the end of each year. they seem like a december only team and i can't see getting into the playoffs with that.

To me, it's an insult for offensive coaches to talk about Cam's sophomore slump. I want a reporter to ask Chud about his sophomore slump, as playcalling was the primary problem with the offense early in the year.

Why this guy gets a pass with the local media is beyond me. Not talking about this piece obviously as it's an in-house production, but how often have we heard Person or any other reporter call Rivera/Chud on the carpet over their mismanagement of the first half of the year?

Not a bad article. This, to me, is reason for excitement:

Carolina finished 12th in total yards (360.7 per game) and 18th in scoring (22.3) despite the facts that only two teams had fewer possessions and only seven had worse average starting field position. The Panthers ranked fifth in yards per play (5.8), sixth in third down conversion percentage (43%) and tied for eighth in red zone touchdown efficiency (58.7%).

Considering how bad the offense looked at the beginning of the year, it seems like adjustments were made to fix it and turn things around. Chud got a pretty bad rap this season - and rightfully so - the offense looked awful against seattle and new york, but maybe things are improving. Also means that Rivera better get us to the playoffs next year.

Still rather have Norv Turner.

Last offseason, we were all begging for Chud to stay in Carolina, and not take a Head Coach job elsewhere. Now most fans want Chud run out of town? I am one of the few that believes Chud has what it takes to be a very good OC. We have seen it with his ability to adapt, his ability to try to things, and creativity. He is getting better at play calling, and Cam is getting better at executing. I am very optimistic for 2013 season and think it will be the best season in Panthers franchise history from an offensive standpoint. Cam will put it all together, and make Chud look like the genius that he is.
