How much long are we going to delay finding our #1 WR

I believe our number one receiver will emerge very soon, but in the meantime we should look to draft a number two receiver in this year's draft. Smitty is still a great receiver even at his age. As much as we complain about looking for a number one, there are teams out there currently and in the past who had no legitimate threat at receiver. Right now receiver is not a weakness with this team.

We don't have a cast for a number 1 to emerge from....

Smith is getting old....and each consecutive 16 game season he puts in means the odds get higher he spends time hurt in the near future. Each year Smith is noticeably regressing in different aspects of his game. Father Time is coming for Steve....when he catches him we likely will be left empty handed.

We need to draft a potential number 1 in the 2nd....not a #2.

AJ Green is definitely exceptional, but seeing as he's still young, I refuse to say he is better than our whole corps. I don't want to disrespect Smitty like that. ^_^

2012

AJ Green - 11 rec TDs

Carolina WRs - 9 rec TDs

AJ Green - 1,350 rec yards

Carolina WRs - 2,315 rec yards (351 more yards than Megatron)

There's a lot of decent receivers in this draft, but I think by our pick, many of the potential number 1 receivers will be gone. We are picking 14th overall in the second round, which means 13 teams who have already gotten their main selections, will have the liberty to take the best players who fell out of the 1st round. Many of them will be receivers. We may do better to draft a different position with our second, and address WR in the later rounds. (Possible number 2 or emerging number 1)

I feel ya, but I still can't bring myself to give the young man that much credit just yet. Saying he is better than our whole core together, with Smitty included? I can't bring myself to do it just yet.

All the Colts have is Wayne. (I think Steve Smith is better than him) The other guys are still developing. Olsen is better than Fleener, and Avery is just a speedy receiver. (Is that Donnie Avery by the way? I know I can look it up, but I'm too lazy to do it right now) B) As far as the 49ers, Crabtree is definitely becoming a good WR, but Smitty is better than him by a long shot. Moss is old, barely plays. Mannigham is a nice third option, but a third option none the less. Their best option is still Davis, and he's a TE. I'll take our corps over those guys.

The thing is we're really lacking a no.1 receiver. All respect to 89, but at some time you things dont get younger for you. Smitty is close to hanging it up no matter how well he can still play. We're a offense built to pass first then run. We need receiver(s) who can constantly beat their guys.

SF and Seattle are two teams who have receivers by committee. They can do that bc theyre a run heavy first offense. We're not built that way.

Remember the old days when 89 was in his prime? In 05' our no.2/3 (Colbert/Carter) were far worst than right now with Lafell and Olsen. Smith in his primed single handily and constantly beat secondary week in and week out. Thats what you want, "a true young no.1 wr" with Cam and this "pass heavy offense". You dont want a receivers by committee type here.

I would trade our entire WR corp for Green.

You wouldn't? Bc I think if the answer is yes, that makes him better.

We can than bring in practice squad players to replace the likes of Armanti, Murphy....and can draft LaFell's replacement.

I agree with that. Yet hopefully we will change our offense with a new coaching staff. One that is more balanced. Even though we are a pass first team, this current offense for most of the year was nothing but passing. Our two strong running backs only touched the ball 8 times combined on average the first 11-12 games. And when they did touch the ball, it was out of the read option, which doesn't work when used on a constant basis.

So hopefully, we get an offensively balanced staff, or at least a new OC who is balanced. With a balanced offense, we can take pressure off of Smitty and this core, and use our talented backfield. Even if D-Will is not here next year, our backfield is still top five in talent.

YuP!

If we can play physical football from the LINE and ground and pound it with Stewart and Tolbert (assuming Dwill isnt brought back), our receiving group can be a decent committee. But if we're going pass heavy again, our only reliable receivers are Smitty and Olsen. And I'm so fatigue watching Lafell and Murphy chasing balls or dropping them. Smith makes catching balls look so easy and those are the hard ones, while Lafell and Murphy making it seems harder than it is.

Well in terms of comparison, I think our core is closely equal to the Bengals core. In other words, I don't think it's vastly better than ours, and I have a hard time saying Green by himself would make the Bengals core better than ours. Yeah, I would trade our core for Green, but right now I wouldn't say it is that much better than ours.

Im telling you we'd be in the Playoffs with a deep threat like AJ Green.

Smith is still a very good players but hes not in his prime (great) anymore like Green. The difference between them? Green's 11 tds to Smith's 4. Thats the difference of winning and losing.

What I really hated was the fact that Gettis was injured for pretty much the whole season. I feel if he were healthy, he would have been a great number two, and LaFell would have been at home as the number 3. As of now, I don't know what to think about Gettis, Rivera refused to play the man. If he's still on the roster next year, perhaps he can still develop into to good number two.

Next year, I would say Green should be better than Smitty by a fair margin. Rest is a wash IMO.
