Of the two potential general managers it appears Dave Gettleman makes the most sense. While he may not be the name that conjures the most excitement, he is the most logical. Jerry Richardson is a creature of habit, and his past history has been to look at pro scouting, and player personnel -- rather than an executive with a college scouting background.

Polian had been a GM for a while when we got him. Hurney's main selling point was that he apprenticed with Bobby Beathard (hence the willingness to trade future first rounders)

Has worked for teams that have been to five Super Bowls (Broncos and Giants) and won two. Has interviewed in the past for GM jobs with the Giants and Browns. Stays under the radar because he’s not a self-promoter, but highly respected for his scouting acumen.

If that's the case, what does he actually provide to the situation!?

I think he gets a courtesy interview (maybe) and then goes back to his old job.

Ross and Gettleman each have over fifteen years working with scouting, player evaluation and such. Beane's experience doing those things is measured in weeks, and even that was with Rivera's help.

as it should be. the job shouldn't just go to a coach with no winning record because he's here. he should have to make his case why we shouldn't look elsewhere.

i just wish our new GM was part of the process.

If the new GM was, it would be more of an open mind handling the process also. Just knowing the Panthers way, we probably pretty much stick with status quo. The only thing about status quo is that it hasn't worked well with only 4 winning seasons in team history.

I expect that'd actually be a big positive for Jerry Richardson.

Seems to me that having Richardson make the coaching decision for me in my first year would be a positive instead of a negative. It essentially gives me one year to acclimate and figure out the cap dilemma without compounding that with a new coach or system and making sure that I had the personnel to run that scheme. If they do well he has something to build on. If they suck then he has no blame in that he wasn't part of the decision. He gets a pass for this year and can fire Rivera and pick his own guy next year when other fires have been put out. If the Panthers reach the playoffs then he looks like a genius for sticking with Rivera even when again he had little to do with it. A win/win unless he also finds out that he won't have say in the decisions going forward either which is a deal breaker. I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

If the reports of JR having a tough time making a decision on Rivera are true, then yes he's being interviewed for the Job today.

I understand that. Just seems like interviewing your current girlfriend to keep the same position. You know what she brings to the table. And its pointless if you don't have some ladies lined up to replace her. Its either offering RR a fresh start OR just doing it out of respect, while they plan to move on anyway...
