NFL Coaching / GM News

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

A little bit of tracking...

Five teams fired their GMs on Monday. Scott Pioli's ouster today makes it six.

Of those teams...

Three (Browns, Chargers, Cardinals) fired their head coach along with the GM.

One (Chiefs) waited until they got a new head coach, then fired the GM.

Of the remaining two, one is definitely keeping their coach (Jets) and the other is expected to (Jaguars).

The Panthers? Outcome still unknown.

If Caldwell is the choice and it's looking Likely that he will be, then the Jaguars will have a new HC and it would be Greg Roman. Caldwell is in a good spot in Atlanta for the time being and it looks like he doesn't want to be a GM with out his own guy. Greg Roman is supposed to be that guy.

Are the Jags expected to keep their coach? Saw on Twitter Jags assistants have been allowed to speak to other teams about jobs

I think they are real close on signing Caldwell to be the new GM, he wants his own HC that he picked. It's likely that he'll pick Greg Roman - Current OC of the 49ers.

Lotta conflicting info coming out of Jacksonville, honestly.

General speculation has been that he stays, but I think ultimately the new GM makes the decision.

From Florio:

Here’s the quick summary, as it’s currently making the rounds in league circles.

1. The Jets are expected to hire 49ers exec Tom Gamble (pictured).

2. The Jaguars are expected to hire Falcons director of player personnel Dave Caldwell.

3. The Chiefs are expected to hire Packers director of operations John Dorsey.

4. The Cardinals are expected to promote Steve Keim.

5. The Panthers are believed to be leaning toward Giants executive Dave Gettleman.

Presumably this would seem to point towards Ross in San Diego (and if the rumor about Ross wanting to hire his own staff is correct, I think he and SD would be a great match).

I'd be fine with that choice, but I'm still a little skeptical of people knowing how we're "leaning" when nobody's even been interviewed yet.

Agreed, with the caveat that you can always have a favorite going into the interviews, then reassess based on how the interviews actually go.
