Rebuilding 101: Focus on process or outcome?

So many on the huddle want a new coaching staff because our record this year was "virtually the same as last year." In terms of outcome, this is a fact: We improved by one game.

Others on the huddle note that our process for achieving our record this year was very different. Both years involved late-season, low-stakes victories (acknowledged); but this year we proved our defensive personnel and schemes were capable of top-10 status rather than relying purely on offensive firepower. P-55 and others have observed this to be an encouraging development that signifies a maturing, and increasingly more dangerous team. But these kinds of gains take time and may not immediately be reflected in our record.

If we're rebuilding our team, what takes priority? Why?
