Johnathan Hankins scouting report from walterfootball

There's been a lot of propaganda around here that Hankins' stock is plummeting and whathaveyou. Thought I'd share an up-to-date analysis on him. I know walter's site isn't the end-all-be-all of scouting, but he's not any worse than the other stuff available online.

http://www.walterfoo...013jhankins.php

Most interesting bits:

Strengths:
  • Very disruptive
  • Excellent at shedding blocks
  • Great size
  • Phenomenal run-defender
  • Stout at the point of attack
  • Nice burst off the snap
  • Good quickness; surprises offensive linemen
  • Pursues well with closing speed
  • Physical
  • Plays with good pad level
  • Nice athleticism for his size
  • Can be effective versus double-teams
  • Scheme versatile
  • Could fit as an end or nose tackle in the 3-4
  • Ready to compete quickly
  • Good upside
  • Excellent bull rush
  • Quality motor

Weaknesses:

  • Not a threat to get a lot of sacks
  • Two-down player in the NFL?

Player Comparison: Pat Williams It is crazy to think that Williams, a three-time Pro Bowler, went undrafted. Obviousl,y that won't be the case with Hankins as he is a consensus first-round pick.

While Williams went undrafted, he and Hankins have a similar style of play. Williams was a tremendous run-defender who ate up double teams and was impossible to move at the line of scrimmage. Hankins did that at Ohio State and should be able to continue that in the NFL. Williams (6-3, 317) has nearly the same measurements as Hankins.

The big difference between the two is in that Hankins should offer more as a pass-rusher. Like Williams, Hankins won't rack up a big sack total, but he should be able to get some pressure on the quarterback and collapse the pocket. I could see Hankins turning into a defender like Williams in the NFL.

NFL Matches: Oakland, Carolina, Minnesota, Indianapolis, New England Oakland has aging defensive tackles, and the team needs some young talent on its defensive line. Going to the Raiders in the top 10 is probably the highest that Hankins could hope to go.

The Panthers are a logical fit for Hankins in the top half of the first round. They badly need tackle help, and he would be a good addition to complement defensive end Charles Johnson and middle linebacker Luke Kuechly.

I really hope people don't get excited about this analysis. Walterfootball is as good of a scout as you or me, and he provides absolutely NO negative analysis. Take a look at his analysis on Richardson, it makes him sound like the best DT prospect in years.

Hankins is on the decline. Really wouldn't be surprised to land him in the 2nd round. And before you quote that and call me crazy, Devon Still was in discussion for our top ten pick this time last year, and we could've had him in the second lol.

its not hard to find someone that simple eats up blockers and holds the point of attack.

unless its an all world DT id rather use the first pick on OL.

If it's not that hard, why have we been so poor at it? Why have plenty of teams? I think it's harder than you're admitting. Guys like that wouldn't command such big paychecks if they were so easy to find.

I'm not "excited" about that analysis, Hankins isn't even my preferred guy but he's my #2 for now. I just wanted to provide a counter balance to the overly negative rhetoric that has been spread around here lately.

You must not read his analyses very often if you don't think he has negative things to say. He hasn't written articles about many guys for this season yet, but of the ones he's done he had substantial negative concerns about Giovanni Bernard (numerous), Justin Hunter (injury, has he recovered his speed), Rogers (character concerns, needing development). Even about Richardson, he says something explicitly contradictory to your description, he said he doesn't think Richardson will be as good as Watt but Watt is the closest comparison to his size, motor and skillset. If anything, the negative list he had on Hankins was probably the shortest I've ever seen in one of those articles from him.

Still was a flash in the pan, and few sources actually projected him that high. Most had him at late first or early second for most of the draft season. A few bumped him about halfway through, but he didn't maintain his projection. Hankins has maintained a steady top 15 projection since early in the regular season. I'm not saying I think Hankins is a can't miss guy, but he is certainly worth being in the discussion for our pick judging by the info we currently have.

Against the Saints???? LOL

$hit you kidding me. Our were damn straight "scrubs" playing against NO front 7 (Ellis, Smith, Lofton, Vilma, Jordan).

And you can't tell me OL is harder to find than DT. You can plug average OL in and still find success. Try pluggin DTs off the street, oh we been doing that for years now. This was the first season we found little success and I gotta say our run D played well bc of Kuechly.

So you arguement is our OL performance against the worst defense (yard wise) in the history of the NFL.

gotcha
