Prevent defense almost cost us again

It's not like we were facing Culter. Brees was going to put some numbers on us anyway in the final minutes of the quarter. He's just that good, unfortunately.

The best they could do is keep everything in front of them and let Brees dink and dunk...thus eat up clock in the process. Problem was, as already mentioned, the players couldn't contain and let up more than was allowed.

That screen pass TD was utter BS, though. Fuggin' Saints holding up a storm let Sproles breeze past our defense.

If you are actually in a prevent defense you shouldn't give up a 30+ yard TD pass. That isn't coaching that is on the players.

There have been a couple of occasions this year when prevent was the right call, including today, but for whatever reason, we just suck at it. Given that all it has accomplished is letting the other team score quickly, it probably should be removed from our defensive repertoire.

SHEESH!!! If Rivera is back (which I hope he is) they better damn well do something about defense late in games.

Blitzing Brees isn't an option unfortunately. He is just too good at making quick reads. The Panthers did about all they could by moving the linebackers deeper. Even with that, Brees can kill any team in a zone in these situations.

Quick running backs and short screens are always the bane of prevent defenses. DBs aren't the best tacklers on the team and the prevent depends on speed (alot of DBs)

When the offense has time and field position, the prevent defense rarely works - barring a turnover.

That goes for almost any team.

The prevent is designed to prevent quick scores at the cost of field position, and as you said, hopefully generate a pick. Once the other team reaches the red zone, the field is compressed enough that you can run typical schemes.

It is also true that our DB's are experts in letting open field runners get by them.
