Fun GM facts

I took at look at the 29 active GMs out there (some teams are family-run and don't have a GM), to see which ones kept their coaches when they were hired. Here's what I found:

These guys kept coaches that were somewhat successful:

Ozzie Newsome kept Brian Billick, who had won the Super Bowl two years prior and the divisional round of the playoffs the year before

Kevin Colbert kept Bill Cowher… or did Bill Cowher allow him to GM there?

Gene Smith kept Jack Del Rio, who had a 50-46 record with two playoff appearances.

Ruston Webster kept Mike Munchak, who was in his second year and who went 9-7 in his first year.

Jerry Reese kept Tom Coughlin, who had just won the Super Bowl

Howie Roseman kept Andy Reid, who had just eaten an extra large pizza with everything on it

Bruce Allen kept Jim Zorn, who had just finished his first year with an 8-8 record.

Phil Emery kept Lovie Smith, who had a 71-57 record with three playoff appearances

Mickey Loomis kept Jim Haslett, who had a 17-15 record and one playoff appearance

And these guys kept guys who had losing records

Marty Mayhew kept Rod Marinelli, who was coming off a 7-9 season in his second year after a 3-13 record in his first. Mayhew was rewarded with an 0-16 record in his first year.

Rod Graves kept Dave McGinnis, who had a losing record that just got worse. He was fired after a year.

Tom Heckert, Jr. kept Eric Mangini for a year. Mangini had just finished his first year with the Browns when he was hired. Mangini went 5-11 both years he was coaching the Browns.

So, all the coaches that were kept save three had winning records and accomplishments. The three that were losers were gone the next year. And all three of those teams went downhill or stayed the same in the GM's first year.

But the Panthers are going to be different! :)

Very nice write up and just shows that when new GMs keep the previous losing HC, bad things happen. Here is another fun fact I saw someone post on an inferior site. Ravens, Packers, Patriots, 49ers,Giants, Steelers. All those teams are considered elite over the course of the last few years. NONE of those HCs of those teams ever had two losing seasons and ALL of them produced a winning record within their first two seasons as HCs. The only exception would be Kubiak when the Texans had a couple losing and .500 seasons before they finally became back to back playoff contenders.

Here are a couple of links to get you started:

There's no way I'm doing that much digging. :)

This.

And if that's not possible, send them to Los Angeles so we can actually care about spending money on coaches/players and have legit fans.
