Good read from Mike Lombardi

I read Adam Schein's latest article on NFL.com and he said that Rivera will be fired. He also said that Rivera is uninspiring.

LOFL - he might be uninspiring as a fan watching on TV, but there is ZERO doubt in my mind that the players are playing for him. He has inspired players like Greg Hardy, the 4th and 5th string cornerbacks, etc.

My opinion of Schein has really gone down during the past couple of days. It's almost like he some vendetta against the team.

(Warning: The following post contains metaphors and is extensive. This may be disturbing to some. If so, please abort the thread immediately.)

What people need to consider is this: JR is learning too, like Blank. He has already made the right move, to find a GM that is right for the organization, hiring an expert, former GM to conduct the search. In other words, Richardson is admitting that he is not the expert.

JR made a huge mistake when he went OCD during the labor negotiations. He thought he had insight. I compare his actions to those families in the 1950s who converted their swimming pools into bomb shelters stocked with canned goods and guns, ready to defend their quarter-acre lots from a Soviet takeover. He gutted the team, figuring he would be in better position to recover after the holocaust. He was wrong.

Marty Hurney really did not know what to do. There was disconnect between GM and owner and coach because philosophies differed. Fox was the fall guy, probably because he was the man in the media whose reputation was hurt first. He bucked the system, or lack of it, and was the first to walk the plank, which in this case, became a diving board into a new pool that was not converted into a bomb shelter. He will swim into the playoffs while the panthers are crawling out of their shelter only to note that there was no league-changing war. Marty then started paying players to stay, including making dime-a-dozen running backs multi-millionaires because that is how they won back in the day. JR longed for that past, but when he realized that re-signing a core of players from a 2-14 team was not a smart spending spree, he took the credit card back from his son and fired him.

Now JR seems to understand that an overhaul--starting with that philosophy, is in order. It starts with the fact that JR hired Ernie Accorsi as his shovel, digging up the bomb shelter he built through fear of that which never happened. When the new man arrives, the odds of Rivera fitting into the new philosophy, the new infrastructure, and the new era of Panther football is very slim. The new GM will not be impressed that Ron won .667 during the last six games of seasons in which they were elimated by Halloween. He will hire his guy. If we are considering a group of GMs, I guarantee each one of them is already considering a handful of coaches.

Rivera was hired by a GM who was confused by the owner's fear of the apocolypse, a GM with no vision, only nostalgic clinging to the past. He signed the players he knew because he had no clue what we needed, causing him to overpay and panic. Those days are over. Rivera's days are over too, whether you like him or not. Richardson will not make the decision concerning the coach--the new GM will make that one a few days after his contract dries. When that happens, then the beginning has begun. In a year or two, reread Lombardi's article and maybe it will make more sense.

Lombardi is absolutely lobbying for a GM job, and there's nothing wrong with that. He has been rumored for San Diego as well as some other spots. Personally, I have always found him to be pretty intelligent and insightful. Contrast him to Casserly, who comes off as a clown and often gets used that way by NFLN.

His pursuit of a new GM gig is why I think he knows Rivera is a goner. He may have talked to Accorsi to see if there was any interest in Carolina, and in the course of that discussion learned that we are going to move on from RR.

I'll grant that he did stop just short of saying "and if you want all this good stuff I'm talking about, hire ME!"

Win or lose bad, he should stay. I've said that the entire season and. I don't see why people think it's so crazy to have him come back for a 3rd year.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you on this one. I respect your opinion and I respect Rivera coaching but I do not believe Rivera is the right guy for our team. Last year Rivera was 2-8 in till the month of December and this year we were 3-7 in till the month of December. One thing that stands out to me about the records is that we didn't go on a streak in till we was completely out of playoff contention. The Panthers has only had 4 winning season since they have been establish as a team. We have been mediocre pretty much year in and year out. I don't think it's crazy for Rivera to come back for a 3rd year but it's not smart either especially when we are starting over again with a GM.

The Buffalo Bills have been going through the same also. This is Chan Gailey third year and he will be fired on Monday. It's risky because the GM has to commit to somebody else guy and not his own guy. If JR doesn't let the GM to determine to keep Rivera or not we are handcuffing him from the start.

    • Super raw, not sure he is worth a top 10 pick.  Primary a pass rusher.  A bit like Burns, very fast athletic but doesnt always follow the play.  His highlights look good but when you watch him play you can see he is just raw and needs to develop
    • Personally, I am not sold on Bryce yet--and I do not think anyone is saying they are, but I don't think Ward is on table when we draft anyway.  Not even sure if I would rather have him than one of the later QBs.  I see a lot of potential in Allar, Nussmeire, Rourke, and even Hamilton from Ohio State--Milroe is intriguing, but I am not sure he is an NFL QB.  Ewers is that sleeper who falls and becomes a solid starter. I think that we sign a veteran who has played and we draft one of these project QBs. To your point:  With that in mind, I think you have to take QB off the table in round 1, and if Bryce can string 4-5 games like KC together, we still need to draft a QB in round three or so---I really think Rourke is a great fit for this offense--he is accurate and gets the ball out quickly---he impressed me vs OSU.   Reason?  I think we may have a tough decision to make about Bryce in 2 years--will he be worth $60m?  That decision is a lot easier if you have been grooming a backup for 2 years who can play. In round 1: I am hoping for PSU's edge Abdul Carter In round 2:  I would like to see us grab a DT who can rush the passer.  Walter Nolen of Ole Miss is versatile and a bit raw. I think he could be an excellent complement to Brown. In round 3:  I would love ILB Danny Stutsman from Oklahoma.  He is a beast. With 11 picks, I would package our 4th rounders to move up into the third round and take a QB.  At the moment, I think Rourke is trending upward and he has the skills Canales seems to want in a QB.  Quick processor, quick release. I would use the fifth rounders on OL.  I know that I left out WR--however, we are getting Thielen back, XL will be improved, Coker will be improved, and Moore has been surprisingly good.  Sanders (TE) has been more than expected in the passing game.  I think we need D more than WR, and maybe we can get a veteran WR to sign or find a hidden gem late.
    • Wouldn't be surprised if he starts a couple Jets games this year with the way the Rodgers thing is going. Giants fans are pissed they didn't keep him lol. He might actually have a little bit of a market.
