Media, Fans and Newton

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

yeah their are a lot of people in the media that literally make up personal attacks on Cam Newton for absolutely no reason but to give him a bad reupation. Fake smile, arrogant, poor attitude and so on. There is nobody doing that kind of thing to other QBs in the league. There is a legit hatred of Cam for some reason across the media world.

Ask yourself this question, do you ever remember Nolan stating the Jimmy Clausen had a "fake smile?" Did any fans spend time trying to create their own version of Nolan with Clausen? I'm sure the answer is NO.

What folks like Nolan did was simply used that Alpha Male image of Cam's against him to weaken him in the eyes of fans because they saw how naturally magnetic he was and their egos couldn't handle it. These sports writers are cynics by trade because they too are fake and disingenuous. They see everyone as fakes just like themselves.

Honestly, do anyone here remember scrutinize Clausen's image as hard as they are with Cam after Nolan's scathing analysis of his character during the draft season?

I think some of y'all are misunderstanding what Scott is saying. Its not that the fans/media don't care about Cam at all, its that they don't care enough to look beyond the surface of whatever they can google, see on twitter, or hear on the street.

Bingo.

And likewise, few outside the Panther fanbase really care to look any deeper than what ESPN tells them.

That is true. But if they did actually google, they would see that there are a lot of positive stories out there on Cam. I don't believe they even do that much. Some of the crazy stuff they push that gets repeated on this site shows me they know many of the Panthers fans really don't care that much for Cam, if at all. They realize the Panthers fans see him only as ends to a means for their team.

Exactly the point.

Don't attribute to malice what can be explained by one's inability to admit when their wrong.

By that I mean that a lot of people in the media & on sports forums predicted that Cam would have a Brady Quinn like slide on draft day... He didn't.

Then a lot of the same folks predicted a deer-in-headlights performance for his first game... He set a record.

Same people said he couldn't do it again...He did better.

Oh, did I mention that he did it with his arm?... They said he'd never be able to do it with his arm. He'd be a bigger, more powerful Vick making plays with his legs.... Then he beat out Manning's rookie record.

Those sounds you hear are those people rushing to remind us that both those records have been broken. They will ignore that it took the top two picks this year to do so.

Bottom line, let those that want to irrationally hate Cam hate him. If you want to poke the trolls with a stick, fine, but if you get too caught up in it, you wind up clashing with people who have legit criticism & wind up looking just as irrational as the people still whining about the towel.

That's obvious.

But there is a clear difference between how Cam is treated or portrayed and how others are. Mr. Scot's post is a very "head in the sand" view on why.

You are right. But in all honesty, it seems a lot of the hate and irrational vibe surrounding Cam is the Auburn/Bama hate. That, let's burn down Auburn, and tar and feather Cam type of hate that was part of his time at Auburn and easily spilled over into the NFL thanks to the media, when he was drafted. It's to the point where you can still feel this burning desire that many simply want to punish Cam for anything because many of those irrational thinkers still believe the NCAA let him off the hook.

Those in the media are well aware which way the emotions sway when it comes to these players and they audience. If you notice, the majority of Bama football players who enter the draft automatically get the red carpet treatment from ESPN and the like. Trent Richardson is a perfect example. On and off the field issues, what is that? quickly mentioned and gone. Our media make their living being Carnival Barkers and satisfying the egos of those who pay them the most.

The Sunday's incident fis a perfect example of that. Before anyone really knew what was happening, Cam was already getting the silly "immature" and not being a "leader" speech from fans.I was watching the highlights on tv and reading this site. Those in the media were actually defending Cam but the fire was already burning with the haters and irrational thikers by the time the Refs part of the story came to light. By the end of the game, you had sports writers like Peter King already out there with his scathing demand that Cam be fined and suspensed. The sites like PFT already had their usual pitchforks carrying crowd screaming for fines and suspension against Cam, while the Raider players were the underdogs. Remember we're talking about the Raiders here. Lost in all of drama was the Raiders admitting that they were intentionally trying to hurt Cam and the Ref admitting that Cam's bump was accidental. There is no room for any sought of rational thinking when that sort of mentality is the driving force surrounding Cam.

Our sports media are well aware who the majority of the Cam audience are and their conversations and stories lines will be seasoned to meet that audience's needs. Even the more fairly positive stories have to give a little shout-out to the Cam haters with a dig or two at Cam.

I think that is the big difference between Cam and The Golden Calf of Bristol. Even thou they are both considered "lightenrods," the audience that drives one is not the same as the audience that drives the other in the eyes of the media, and the image of the players and their stories reflect that.

seriously could you imagine if cam went over a month without completing 50% of his passes? particularly against those stout defenses in KC, detroit, and tennessee? guys like luck get a pass.

for example, here are some dumbasses who think luck should have made the pro bowl, despite his sub-par play

http://sports.yahoo....-040000663.html

http://www.examiner....ro-bowl-rosters

http://www.nfl.com/p...-pro-bowl-snubs (fuging lol casserly and smith actually think luck should have made it over schaub good lord)

and here's a dumbass who thinks luck has been "the afc south offensive player of the year, rookie of the year, and fourth-quarter player of the year"

http://espn.go.com/b...ivision-in-2012

Yes, even more proof why we need to stop should stop taken these clowns in our sports media so seriously.

I think Scot has made his point about the media.

And it's not so much the lazy journalism and false stories as much as, who benefits from them and who gets hurt by them.

Just cause he had some incidents off the field back in the day feels like we keep him on a short leash. Maturation is the least of my worries. Cause in my honest opinion; you cant rush maturation. Besides I gave up on the media. Why worry about something they pull out of their ass?

Speaking of the media, fans, and Cam, It's hard not to question the mindset and motives of some fans on this site when they claim they don't hate Cam nor have any personal baises towards him. I couldn't help but notice the irony of one of the Admins for this site making light of the media's pay-for-play scandal against Cam by having a gif in a post where he's calling Cam a "thug" by associating him with people of Atlanta in another thread about the media's constantly creating false stories against Cam.The gif has Cam getting into a Cab with his Auburn coach and a couple of the Tiger players and there is money being passed around. He posted, in his defense, not to be intentionally attacking Cam racially when a fellow poster called him out on his post. He continued to make the argument that the "thug" label isn't racist and the fact that him calling Cam a "thug" shouldn't insinuate that he feels he's one. He is posting all that in a thread about false media stories with a gif from the biggest false story that started it all against Cam. If that isn't irony at it's best and extreme passive aggressive behavior, I don't know what it. Even sadder is, him boldly defending his actons while he and the other Admin questions the motives of anyone who dare to call him out. Not only is that deep seeded ignorance, it's even deeper seeded arrogance.

It's no wonder the negative treatment of Cam, by the media, is so accepted on this site by so many and instigated by outsiders. When you have Admins so arrogant that they can't even see their own ignorance, and is quick to accuse anyone who dare to shine a light on such ignorance as stirring up racism, it's not surprising.

FYI, No one has to tell grown men that the word "thug" is now meant as a not so subtle way of describing minorities, especially black men. Simple common sense should do the trick. Just read the many Sports and News sites regarding black men and you will see the word being thrown around like money in a strip joint in the many comments. But rarely do you see the word being used when the article is associated with whites. The second most used word associated with minorites in a negative way is the word "Jail. As if only they belong there.

But one honestly, cannot expect anything better from this site when those who are responsible for it's conduct are even more closed minded and quite proud of it. The acceptable behavior on this site starts with those at the top. You honestly make the media's job quite easy.

What's happening to Cam has nothing to do with some lap-top incident when he was 18. IT has nothing to do with him not being mature. It has nothing with him wearing a towel on his head. It has nothing to do is leadership skills.

You are misunderstanding me.

I don't believe this to be the case. I haven't ever seen Deangelo or Stewart called thugs. I haven't seen Thomas Davis or Charles Johnson called thugs. Are they minorities? I have seen Jeremy Shockey called a thug. Is he a minority?

I've seen Steve Smith called a thug, but he has attacked his own team mates on more than one occasion in his career. Could have something to do with it.

Saying the word thug is just another derogatory word used to describe all minorities isn't accurate. Its probably used more to describe anyone who is perceived to be a trouble maker or someone that embraces the materialistic me first nonsense that plagues the air waves today,

People who like to be offended and look for a reason to be constantly probably see the word thug as a good opportunity.

The list of passive-aggressive Cam "fans" and "supporters" on this site is legion.

They can usually be found by noting the form of phrases such as:

"Cam is my QB, BUT... "

"I support Cam 100%, BUT... "

"Cam sure has been doing great, BUT... "

The "BUT" being followed by one of the standard Cam-hate media tropes.

A typical example was from the last game. Many stood up and pledged their troth to their beloved Cam (standard passive), but then insisted that, gosh, he sure was being an inaccurate passer against Oakland and if he'd only work on his passing accuracy they'd love him EVEN MORE.

Now Cam being an "inaccurate" passer is a standard media-hate trope pointed at Cam time and again.

By the way, Cam was so "inaccurate" against Oakland he completed 62% of his passes.

That didn't stop the P-A specialists from getting their shots in though.
