Media, Fans and Newton

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Go read anything on ESPN, Foxsports, or PFT about Cam Newton, scroll down and read the comments, and tell me you can't feel the hate and vitriol on your skin like its bug spray. It's disgusting. Last year, a lot of the Cam haters died off, now this year they are back and stronger than ever. And all the hate is from unfounded bullshit. I read on the Foxsports site about Cam's 21K fine, and people are saying he pushed the ref, and kicked Kelly in the face and should be kicked out of the league. I've never seen anything like it. Roethlisberger didn't get half the hate Cam gets after he fuging raped somebody.

I typically don't give a damn if someone talks crap about a player on my team, but the Cam hate has me taking it personally because it is ALL based off and driven by a false media narrative. It actually gets me pissed off now to where I want to punch people. Yes, I have rage issues but I don't care. I hear the same poo over and over about Cam for doing things EVERYBODY does. The raiders came out and publicly said they were trying to hurt Cam, so he kicked one of them off of him as he tried. Do you hear about that? Nope, just the kick. The AFC players trying to take him out at last years pro bowl. Anything? Nope, Cam sucks and threw four picks. Panthers getting blown out by Giants and Cam does the superman and everyone won't get off his ass. Arian Foster does his bow after scoring when the Texans were down by 5 touchdowns, not a fuging peep.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When Cam wins a Super Bowl, I hope he drops the drawers and takes a poo right on the NFL logo at midfield, smears it in real good, then uses it to write Cammy Cam Juice on the Lombardi trophy in his own feces. fug you haters.

Sorry end rage rant.

TL;DR VERSION: Yes Cam gets hated on nationwide more than anyone else in the league.

yup - inside the comments section of every national article regarding Cam the hate is visceral. It's easy to pile on when everyone else is doing it!!!

But forming your own opinion takes effort.

Most people outside of this fanbase don't care enough about us, or Newton, to make that effort.

(which is actually my whole point here)

Right which is why when you have some bozo like Adam Schein or Nolan Nowarki or Rick Reily write a cute little article bashing the guy, if you're not a fan of the team or have a very small scope on the NFL you're probably going to believe what they write/say or at least have it influence your opinion.

I'm in Akron OH right now and I can assure you that no one up here gives a crap about the Panthers or Cam. On Sunday, when I have to go to the only bar that has the NFL package it's going to be like pulling teeth (and I'm sure I'll get laughed at) to get them to change one of the 100 televisions showing the Browns/steeler game. That will never happen in Charlotte. There's probably a better chance of a Jets game or Steelers game on in Charlotte than the damn panthers.

Exactly the point.

And worth a mention on the draft analysis...

When I was younger, the PFW draft previews were written by a guy named Joel Buchsbaum. And yes, he talked to sources, but the majority of his analysis was done slavishly watching game tape. He wrote what he saw, not what someone else did, and his draft previews were the best in the business.

Buchsbaum died relatively young (40s I think) and I don't know that anyone has really filled his shoes since.

These days most draft analysts go off of hearsay from scouts or scouting services. They consider the job too big to be done on their own (and they may have a point) so the vast majority of what you read or see from Kiper, McShay, Nawrocki and others is all second hand. Some of it's good, some of it's bad, but very little of it is original.

That's another thing that's symptomatic of sports journalism today being somewhat lazy.

I know I probably sound like an old man hyping up "the good old days", but then again, when you get right down to it I guess that's what I actually am :(

Yeah I always get in arguments with people who take Kiper and McShay's word as gold. If these two guys were truly gifted at scouting NFL players they would be working for a team right now. Not to mention both of those guys look like they might be able to squeeze out one pushup between the both of them.

I used to like Mike Mayock but when he called Cam "lazy" before the combine a few years ago, man that just shows you haven't done your homework.

My understanding was always that Kiper got his info from Ourlads Scouting.

It's what we get these days.

For the record Scot, I hope you are right. But I have little faith in humanity as a whole, sports fans less, and media least.

I'm in Cali and have several friends and coworkers that hate Cam Newton, not a damn one of them having a legitimate reason save one coworker who's daughter goes to school at Alabama.

So your point is that they care enough about cam to make everything about him a big story, but they somehow still don't care about him at all.

Assuming this is true its supposed to make us feel... What?

I don't have a lot of faith in humanity either, and certainly not in sports media (or media in general).

What I do know is this. Win, and the bandwagon starts filling up.

Point is that neither he nor the Panthers are important enough on the national level that they care about making dead certain they get the full story right.

It just has to sound good.

Feel about that however you wish.

Well I agree that they don't care enough to get the story right, but I don't agree that it stems from some sort of chronic indifference. If they really didn't care they would write a story about something else.

They write what they write because it is a business and they know what sells.

Glad other fans are coming around to the way i have been feeling since last year. I go through it all the time at work, on twitter, etc. Now i just give a big middlefinger to anybody that has something negative to say about Cam. Im gonna REALLY enjoy all this when he brings a championship to Carolina.

Valid. And I'd add that there's no bigger bandwagon than sports media.

Win and you can do no wrong. Lose and you can do no right.

And technically, they have to right about something.
