The GM Candidates

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

The Panthers really have to move quick in this situation especially if they hire somebody like Marc Ross. Ross has experience with Tom Heckert from his days with the Eagles, and if Ross gets any GM job which right now i'm assuming the Panthers he may want to bring Heckert in as Pro Personnel Director.

I guess the point i'm trying to make is that we should know very soon who the next GM will be for the Panthers.

definitely interesting, though Heckert's camp suggests he has 2 interviews going (and may or may not be in play for AZ).

A quick cursory look turns up only one direct Panthers connection, receiver coach Fred Graves.

He played for the Colts in 99, which would have put him under Polian.

From what I could find there might be another slightly less direct connection.

Looks like he went to the same high school in Washington as Bobcats GM Rich Cho (albeit 6 years apart) and both guys worked at pro franchises in Seattle during the early 2000s. Cho was with with the SuperSonics from the late 90s-2007. Dawson was with the Seahawks from 2001-2006.

Pure speculation, but odds are they know each other.

Edit: They didn't go to the same high school. Looks like they were a few miles away but in the same public school system.

Lake Dawson was promoted to Vice President of Player Personnel on Jan. 18, 2012. He is entering his sixth season with the Titans and has 18 years of NFL experience as a player and executive.

Dawson works alongside general manager Ruston Webster by managing day-to-day football operations with a primary focus on player personnel. He is responsible for overseeing both the pro personnel and college scouting departments.

A highly-respected talent evaluator, Dawson assists head coach Mike Munchak and the general manager with the team’s daily roster moves and all transactions via free agency and the annual NFL draft. He also scouts all levels of professional football, including the NFL, CFL and Arena Football League. In addition to his various football operations responsibilities, he assists with contract negotiations.

Dawson joined the Titans in 2007 as Director of Pro Personnel and was promoted in 2011 to VP of Football Operations. He came to the Titans’ organization with 12 years of NFL experience. While with the Seattle Seahawks, Dawson was an instrumental member of the personnel department, as the organization won the NFC West Divisional Championship in three consecutive seasons and earned a Super Bowl appearance in 2005. In Seattle, Dawson last held the title of Assistant Director of Pro Personnel and he originally joined the Seahawks as a Pro Personnel Assistant in 2001.

Dawson was an NFL wide receiver and a third-round selection by Kansas City in 1994. He also spent time on the Colts’ roster before retiring due to injuries and ending his six-year NFL career. He is a graduate from the University of Notre Dame, where he played football for four years. He is working towards a Master’s degree in Business.

Dawson and his wife, Lori, have three children: Bella, Myles and Leila.

Here's a scenario to ponder...

The Panthers hire Dave Gettleman as GM.

The other GM dominoes fall as Florio is predicting (Gamble to Jets, Caldwell to Jags, Dorsey to Chiefs, Keim to Cardinals) and as our resident Charger fan thinks may happen, Tom Telesco gets the Chargers job.

Marc Ross winds up shut out again. But the Giants, wanting to keep him, promote him to assistant GM, in the process ousting current assistant GM Kevin Abrams.

Abrams, a noted expert in the salary cap (he previously served on the NFL Management Council) finds work as an assistant GM handling salary cap issues in...Carolina. In this capacity, he also serves as Gettleman's heir apparent.

How's that for conspiracy theory?

Well, you can cross one potential suitor for Marc Ross off the list.

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jags have narrowed their choice to two: either Dave Caldwell (Falcons) or Steve Keim (Cardinals). General speculation has favored Caldwell.

The Jags interviewed Ross yesterday. He's got four or five other interviews lined up (including us).

I'm really curious as to why he's gotten so many interviews but never received an offer. It really does remind you of Rivera in that regard. If prognosticators are correct,, Ross - whom many considered this offseason's hottest candidate - could wind up shut out again.

And the big question is, why?

Hard to tell, but the Giants draft's aren't that great. He's pretty damn young and has had a lot of success with the Giants organization though. Could have made him stubborn and cocky.

If he's that way, it might not sit well with Richardson either. Gettleman is said to be a humble guy.

Gotta admit, the Panthers record when taking guys that have been passed over a lot by others - drafting, coaching, etc - isn't a very good one. I know it's not necessarily the same situation here, but if I'm being honest that does make me a little nervous about the prospect of hiring Ross.
