The GM Candidates

Got the profiles for the guys I take most seriously done. Only ones left are McCloughan and Kokinis, neither of whom I take that seriously right now. McCloughan was mentioned earlier in the process but hasn't been mentioned since, and Kokinis may just be speculation.

Granted, anything is possible.

A little something for the people who think Brandon Beane is an actual candidate...

Beane has gone from handling budgets and overseeing the equipment, video and team operations to watching film with coach Ron Rivera, talking with teams about possible trades and making decisions that will shape the Panthers’ immediate future.

Throw in that Beane is only 36. That's three years younger than the youngest candidate, Marc Ross, but with far less experience in actual football management.

You can throw your "Richardson only wants a yes man" theories around all you want, but this ain't happenin.

Quick note on Steve Keim...

Mike Lombardi is reporting that Cardinals GM might be relieved of his duties, which would likely mean the job getting handed to Keim.

After what I saw and read researching him, I'd love for us to at least be able to take a look at him, but we might not get that opportunity.

Marty Hurney was a beat-writer before he started working for the Redskins PR department, then he learned under the Chargers GM Bobby Beathard in the mid-90s, then started managing the cap for the Panthers before becoming GM. Hurney was actually the interim GM for awhile after Polian left, a few years before he actually became GM.

What's your point here? Beane has almost an identical amount of experience that Hurney did before becoming GM of the Panthers. Is that a good thing for the future of the team? No. Is he being considered for the job? Definitely. If he follows the same path as Hurney, Beane will be the GM in a few years after the Panthers crash a burn with their next hire. (kidding about that last part)

Like i said a while back, this discussion magnifies the prior error.

Hurney was fired for poor job performance. And his mentor in the GM world was actually one of the best GMs ever (Bobby Beathard), Beane's mentor was a guy who just got fired for poor performance on his first ever gig.

If Beane was the pupil, and the teacher was fired for being bad at his job, that doesn't speak well for his chances.

And please don't tell me you can look at the resumes' of these guys who have been scouting and evaluating for 15-20 years and take seriously the notion that a guy who up until a few weeks ago was overseeing the equipment and the video department and making travel arrangements is a serious candidate next to that :wacko:

You don't put a guy who's never even been a scout in charge of your entire personnel department.

Very good question, but it happens all the time. I'm a little reluctant to let a 39 year old run the Panthers, but fortunately I don't get a vote.

In fairness, DeCosta is only two years older.

Most of the other guys are in their late forties with the exception of Gettleman who's over 60.

I guess you have to look at "age" vs "experience".

Pat Yasinskas: Dave Gettleman is the one name I keep hearing. But I've also been told not to be surprised if they make interim GM Brandon Beane the permanent GM.
