The GM Candidates

Mr. Scot

The Observer's GM profile article may actually provide a hint where the Brandon Beane stuff is coming from.

I wonder, could Ron Rivera be the one who wants the team to take a look at making Beane the permanent GM?

If that's the case, I'd say Rivera is unwittingly screwing himself, because this...

...is not the resume' of a guy you want making the draft and free agency decisions that help provide you with the players you use to set your roster.

Granted, it's possible that having Beane in charge could essentially mean that Rivera would have total control, which is something head coaches often want (unknown if Rivera does) but I don't really think that'd be a good idea.

That would explain a lot.

Yeah, it would, wouldn't it?

Ya gotta figure there's no way a guy like Ernie Accorsi could look at Beane and see him on equally viable with guys like Ross or Gettleman. But Rivera might, or might want to keep him around for his own reasons (i.e. de facto control).

If the team is smart (and that's a topic that's very much up for debate right now) the only interview they give Beane is a courtesy one before moving on to the real candidates. Though truthfully, even that's kind of a waste of time.

On a related note, I wonder if Accorsi is participating in the interviews themselves. It'd certainly be a good idea since no one would know as much about what to look for as him, though I'll grant that with Gettleman it could be seen as a potential conflict of interest.

we hired a sports writer before.

of course by the time he got the GM job officially he had been doing a lot of the GM duties and had been sharing it with another guy for several years, but hey...it worked before to promote from within, what could go wrong?

not serious about that, by the way.

Didn't figure

I still look back at that and just go "wow". It's not quite as bad as when Detroit hired Matt Millen out of the broadcast booth. Hurney had at least had been working as a salary cap manager (Beane isn't even that).

Still, I think now that the team has seen what happens when you put someone who isn't a "football guy" in charge of running things, they won't make that same mistake again.

( I hope)

the thing that is funny in potential situation that i think is a nightmare is that we are considering hiring a bean counter named beane to be the GM.

silver lining.

On Ross:

It's reported New York Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross is meeting with Jerry Richardson this afternoon, and it's rumored that it's his second interview with the organization. Rumors swirling over the weekend indicated that he met with the team on Saturday. Multiple interviews typically mean a team is drawing closer to a hiring, but that is speculation. What we do know is that Ross is the only person so far from outside of the organization who has met with the team twice, if rumors are to be believed.
