Yep, sometimes you have to take risks to get ahead. With the cap situation, the age/injury issues of some of the key kogs of the team.. Why not give it all over to a coach that knows exactly what he needs and what to look for to run his offense. The QB is already in place, the team just needs to be built up around him in a few areas.

Yep, sometimes you have to take risks to get ahead. With the cap situation, the age/injury issues of some of the key kogs of the team.. Why not give it all over to a coach that knows exactly what he needs and what to look for to run his offense. The QB is already in place, the team just needs to be built up around him in a few areas.

The reason why not is it has often proved to be just too much for one person to handle. It is hard to do a good job with all that is involved in being a head coach and also do a good job having oversight of player selection.

That doesn't mean it can't be done. You need to have a scouting department with a good leader and give him almost complete autonomy until the post-season and run up to the draft. You need to have someone you trust to work the cap and handle player negotiations. You must know when to put on your GM cap and when to put on your HC cap, because those perspectives are different.

Most can't handle it, some can.

Don't know if he does or not, but lets say for example... Now this is just an example.

It would work similar to the setup right now in the Front office where there is a guy handling just the cap, a guy handling the scouting department and then the HC, Position coaches, Coordinators and so forth working together with the HC having the most say and the final say.

Lets say the team brings in Kelly as the coach, then promotes Beane to GM.

With Kelly here you might have a situation where there's the figure head GM (Beane) who runs the day to day football operations side and is the middle man between the HC and the departments.

Kelly tells Beane what he wants done during the season as far as recruiting and so forth and it gets handled by the department and the recruiters. If a signing needs to be done, Kelly makes a decision on what to do and checks with the Cap guy to see if it works.

Ect....

Basically how it's working right now with Beane and Rivera, with Rivera basically having final say over everything. Kelly would probably have a bit more power then Rivera does, but it would work similar I would think. Also If you don't believe Rivera basically does have final say on personal, check the Panther.com article from October about it.

In the end, Rivera is the tiebreaker in personnel matters, but it's a process that depends on the scouting directors or, as in the case of Hogue, the coordinators and possibly a position coach for input. Then there is the matter of making sure it all fits under the salary cap with Rogers.

the guy knows what type player he wants and doesn't want. he knows what kind of player fits his program. he knows that for his style of football to work he has to have the players to run it. he knows there will be players on the team he inherits who won't fit what he has in mind and he knows he can probably find free agents and prospective draft picks that fit his program better. he wants to be able to build the team his way.....just like most coaches that are actually worth a crap.

Exactly, there's going to be guys behind the scenes that handle the cap, scouting and so forth. Just like right now Beane runs everything in the Front office, but delegates everything off to the proper people. Like Rob Rogers handles the Cap, the GM, HC and other coaches make group decisions on waiver claims and so forth. With scouting being handled by Gregory and Koncz respectively.

It would be a group deal with Kelly having final say and the majority vote on personal matters to build the team to fit his offense and whomever's his DC's defensive styles.

It's not a question of no success in the NFL or past cases working or not, in the most part those that didn't work went to teams that were no where close to having the pieces in place for their system to work. Every case is going to be different and have not worked for some reason or another.

It's a case of a HC going to a team that can run their system or is close to being able to do so or being smart enough football wise to know what to change and what not to change to fit the team your going to.

I think in both of those Cases, Kelly would be going to a team that could run his system and he's smart enough to know what changes need to be made. I mean heck, there's ton of NFL coaches getting his knowledge on how to run his system, so we know it works in the NFL already.

he's a coach. he knows what he wants/needs personnel- wise for his program to work. you don't need to have NFL experience to know who will or won't fit what he wants to do.

again, i don't think his lack of NFL experience is all that big of a deal or much different than an assistant at the pro level trying to make the jump to HC. both need experienced assistants to make it work. rivera needed someone with HC experience to help him adjust to the new job. kelly would need assistants with a ton of pro experience to help him adjust to the nuances he'd have to get used to.

neither is a big deal for the right coach, tho.

All I'm saying is it's a legitimate question...it's not a no-brainer, so for Rayzor to call it mind-numbing that some would question it is just over the top.

And I have to take strong exception to your statement that because he has consulted with NFL teams, that automatically means he will be successful in the NFL. Many college coaches exchange info with pro teams, and coaches are always talking to each other. Just in the last two years, Bellicheck has brought in Saban, Kelly, and Urban Meyer. As to Kelly's contribution to NE's offense, it has largely been in helping them getting play calls in faster when they are in the no-huddle. It's not like they are running "his system" (at least what he currently runs at Oregon) as their base offense.

None of this is to say Kelly can't be a success in the league or that my mind is closed to him. I just don't understand those that think he is a slam dunk winner in the NFL. That is an unknown until he does it.
