So can someone help me with this. Why do GMs have so much power to begin with in terms of what players a team drafts or signs? Maybe im not thinking about this the right way but it would seem to me HCs and coordinators would have a lot better grasp of what their team needs as opposed to a yuppie GM that spends most of his days in a plush office

Thats what I believe for years also, but I dont know why.

and then he goes on and take the Eagles to the Playoffs next season while we're stuck with Rivera, and JR has half the stadium fill with opposing fans. Right?

I would love to see Kelly making the calls on Draft Day. Harbaugh, Schiano, and Carroll has shown that they can draft players pretty well with their experiences of recruiting players back in college (Aldon, Kaepernick, Culliver, Doug Martin, Barron, David, Wagner, Irvin, Carpenter, Wilson, Moffitt, KJ Wright, Sherman, Okung, Earl, Chancellor, etc). Cant say that these college coaches doesnt know talents.

well I was expecting rumors of a young coach with a ton of confidence to say that he didn't want any input in personnel decisions at all.

I think we should see what he says, and I don't think we should laugh at him if he says he wants full control... try to negotiate.
