a guy in his spot who has a LOT to lose is very smart to want as much control as possible. You don't want to leave the empire he has built in the Great Northwest to a situation where your hands are tied.

It's not pure ego if you can actually get what you are asking for

agreed. he is going to fundamentally change the culture of a team he inherits. he has to have the personnel he needs to make it work and not everyone in the league can make it work.

some coaches can mold what they do to fit who they have. some coaches build a team around what they want to do. with kelly, i think the schemes will fit what he has on the team, but the frantic pace, endurance, and discipline needed to carry out his whole team concept of "hurry up" football requires people that aren't used to taking time off between plays on the field and wasting time in practice. he's got to have people that fit the culture he expects and players young enough to be molded into the type player he wants them to be.

i don't have a problem with this and i really don't believe he's wanting to handle all the cap stuff. he wants control over personnel. no one knows who he needs better than the coach. that's the case for 99% of the coaches out there.
