If he stays next year on a "short leash" what's the point of even having him here to begin with? If he gets fired after a bad start it only completely ruins the season all together. It would mostly be another losing season. Why are you guys so opposed to just having a clean break, get a better coach and have actually hope instead of norv/Rivera fake hope. We deserve better and can do better. We've see what RR has and its nothing special. Hopefully the new gm sees this. This team has talent that just needs a better coach to bring them to the next level. Regardless of the outcome of next Sundays game, Rivera needs to leave.

You assume that we're going to have a bad start. What if we start 6-2, and finish the season 10-6 and make the playoffs? Assuming we beat the Saints, you could argue that we are three plays, only three motherfukking plays away from being 10-6 this season.

If any of 1. the bomb to Roddy over Naka, 2. Cam's skipper against Seattle, or 3. any of the slants to Marshall with Norman playing soft went our way, then we aren't even having this conversation about Rivera. (Edit. Wrote that bit before even seeing that there was a thread on the subject)

The law of averages says we're bound to have some close games go our way next year, just because we had an inordinate amount go against us this year.

So I get what you're saying about why even keep Rivera around if he's going to be on a short leash, but maybe if he was on a shorter leash this year, Naka gets benched or we switch from the read option sooner and our record is different. Honestly, we are nothing more than some bad luck away from being a playoff team this year, and for that I say Rivera stays.

No, he's an inexperienced head coach that is still learning...and made the mistake of not bringing in any former HC's to help show him the ropes. It's way too early to say what the final product will be. But for us the question is can we afford to wait and find out, or should we bring someone else in with at least some HC experience?

I'll expand of my earlier post. I was in a hurry then. I really don'y understand why you think Rivera has done so bad. It takes time to take 2-14 team with a bunch of young guys and 3rd stringers to learn how to win in the NFL. Also It's Rivera's first head coaching gig so it was a learning curve. I think it is obvious that he has learned how to lead and motivate his team. The players love him and are playing their hearts out for him. The defense has become elite because of Rivera. He has taught every one of those guys how to make one-on-one tackles and how to be intimidating. It's true that we are only a few plays away from having a much better record and being in the playoffs. But that is part of the learning curve. You can't expect a first time head coach, rookie QB, and other young guys off the street to take the team to the super bowl. The team has been extremely respectable and are on an upward trend. It's not like we are 1 and 14 and not in any games. To tear it all apart now and bring in a new scheme would be the stupidest thing to ever happen in the history of the Panther's franchise. You know-it-all fans that think we have to bring in a whole new coaching staff every time we have a losing season really irk the poo out of me. It's absolutely ridiculous think. I'm just glad people like you are in charge of making any important decisions in the world.

It is not his coaching ability, it is his 'play not to lose' and 'let them systematicly beat us' MENTALITY. He does not have 'winning' in his mind. That is why we failed this year, this is why we will fail again. You play to win the game, he does not get that point.

Yep, I take this view too. I don't think Rivera's body of work - given he too is new to his job - is enough to make a definitive statement about what he will be. I think the potential setback in the team's progress by having to learn new coaches and a new system are real dangers if you switch now, and I think over the last half of the season I have seen the "trending upward" that JR has made a prerequisite for RR's continued employment.

Maybe we should ask ourselves were we happy when we brought him in? Most here were pretty happy.Is there a replacement coach out there that we know will bring us a winning playoff team given our talent,maturity, and schedule? Are we a playoff team with our given talent? Did Cam have the intangibles this year to make a playoff run? Did Cam have the supporting cast he needed? This is not meant to be critical of Cam because there are areas where he is the absolute best but he also has areas he will need to improve to take it to the next level.He also needs a better supporting cast.

We better hope that Rivera can improve, otherwise we have a new coach with new schemes and without a guarantee that he will be any better.I will say that I was unhappy as the next guy with our performance this year but I do see areas of improvement and I do see areas where the fault lies with the players. If we can get improved play from our offensive line and Cam can take it to the next level with his leadership, passing accuracy and pocket presence I see no reason we could not be in the playoff hunt with Rivera as head coach.
