Why was the Palmer Hit a Penalty?

The replay looked to me like Hardy led with his helmet into the QB instead of his pads. You can see his facemask go right into Palmer's ribs. I don't necessarily disagree with that call, but the no-call on Cam was absolute bullsh*t

What you said above is key: HE PUT HIS *FACEMASK* INTO PALMERS RIBS.

NOT the crown of his helmet.

Leading with the crown of your helmet (i.e. spearing) is and should be a penalty.

Keeping your head up and putting your facemask into the torso of the player you're tackling? Hell, that's just textbook football.

It WAS a violent hit. Hardy was bringing the pain and intentionally so. But it sure as hell wasn't a cheap shot and it should NOT have been penalized.

I watched it on Tivo 20+ times and as much as I hate to say it, Hardy speared him. If you watch the replay from the opposite angle Hardy has his head down and makes his initial contact with the crown of his helmet. That force pushed his head up to where his face mask is bured in Palmer's ribcage.

I love a good hit and it's didn't look like Hardy was trying to spear him, he just got his head down a little low. Watch the one Luke got a flag on. Now that is a form tackle. His head is way up and the first thing to hit the guy is the front of his facemask.

One one on Godfrey looked to be all shoulder but he did barely catch some of his helmet with his shoulder.

IMHO, Hardy's flag was legit under today's NFL rules. Luke's was a BS goal and C-God's was boarderline to BS.

Well if he is fined, it's bullshit, and I hope the higher paid players on the team pool together to pay his fine. Hate Hurney all you want, Hardy was maybe one of the best picks he ever made.

I agree except to say pooling money may not be the thing to do after the Saints .
