Intresting Norv Turner comment when asked about being a OC...

Turner's saying he wants to run his offense. Coaches he knows, means he's familiar, that will want him for that, and not just "oh look I recognize this guy's name."

Dropping Chudzinski is not an option for Rivera. They're tied together, in essence, and Chud hasn't been that bad. Now, the idea of dropping him for Turner would be catastrophic - they're more or less the same in almost every facet, and they have a longer standing association than either do with Rivera. You don't fire one guy to pick up his friend.

More than one team of late has had a "run game coordinator" and a "passing game coordinator" (didn't Fox give McCoy that title?) And of course there's the ever popular "assistant head coach" title as well.

That said, while I wouldn't mind seeing some changes in the assistant lineup (would love to have Juan Castillo, Dave Toub or Bobby April on board) I tend to agree that if Rivera stays, hi staff will likely stay largely intact.

Personally, I wouldn't mind being the "Chargers of the East." The San Diego Chargers under Norv Turner have done better then the Panthers have the last 5 seasons.

sure, I dig the split coordinator thing, and it's a way of making something happen. It props up the assistant head coach/experienced coach thing Rivera talked about last week. But Norv's not going to be a position coach and McCoy (or modern equivalent with Steve Wilks) had a position.

Definitely Bobbly April. Toub re-upped, and I don't see Lovie getting fired. I'd really rather not stay with Rodgers. I guess there's always Wannstedt if/when Chan goes (and Belin leaves for college, since he's been decent), but I don't really like Wannstedt much. Castillo would be very good - I still believe Rivera's recommendation may have led Castillo to be promoted, given its proximity to Reid offering up McDermott.

So, I don't know. It'd be interesting, but Norv seems like a longshot, and it's the same offense minus the stuff put in for Cam (which won't change, and doesn't need to change - it just needs less use).

Chud: TE coach/Assistant OC

I can dig it. Obviously it's just a reshuffle of the Chargers coaching staff a few years ago, but that was when the Chargers were top 3 in both offense and defense and only ST kept them from being a dominant team. With the talent we have, that coaching staff can succeed. Bringing in someone like Norv or someone else of a similar experience level to help out is about the only way I'd be ok with Rivera staying.

I don't ultimately see Smith getting fired either, though there has been some talk he's on the hot seat.

Given some of Rivera's recent comments (if he's retained) I'm not necessarily betting he'll dump Matsko, but I'd rather have Castillo.

Likewise, he might not bail on is old teammate, but I'd prefer Rodgers go back to being an assistant to someone like Bobby April.

Turner? Like you, I don't think Chudzinski gets his walking papers or gets demoted if Rivera stays. You could make an argument for it but I doubt it happens. But remind me, wasn't Turner a 'consultant' in SF before he got a full time job? Regardless, that's a role I could see him playing.

Truthfully though, I think someone will offer him a full blown OC job. It just might not be us.

I don't want Rivera here personally but I just think he's retained and I really don't have a problem with it. It's actually kind of a tough decision for the new GM. Ross, Gettleman, Gamble, someone will be coming in and evaluating the situation at hand...it's as much as a toss up imo as there's ever been here.
