anybody think about our pass rush on 3rd downs?

Brown-Johnson-D.Lewis-Peppers

oh, and blitz Thomas Davis off the side... :D

fixed and not bad at all.

pep will stay on that right side.

i'm not sure about that middle, though.

Had to laugh at this..

Charles Johnson came on late last year, and has been working in Peppers' spot. Tyler Brayton is the incumbent on the left, a solid run defender who kicks inside on third downs. While the Panthers would like to get Brown up to speed as soon as possible, the presence of Johnson and Brayton keeps it from being an absolute necessity for him to be first-down ready from the opener.

Meeks is going to make him a force no matter where he lines up. Having two guys that can get to the QB equally well from both sides of the ball is important.

IMO this puts as much pressure on the LBers and DTs to know when to penetrate and know when to stay at home as it does on Everrette b/c he is going to get thrown around in his first year...it is inevitable.

but it doesn't matter how fast the DEs are at beating there man....w/o a push from the DTs the DEs get pushed right behind/past the QB. We have great DTs for the run but they don't provide the penetration up the middle imo.

Brayton got pretty good penetration when he moved inside, and Lewis can do it when he's 100% healthy, but the main thing, IMO, is depth. We really need Corvey Irvin and Hayden (or one of the rookie FA's) to step up as a rookie just so we can keep guys fresh.

i remember a while back debating with someone that brown would be on the left side and he said that would be dumb because that is where the bigger and stronger DE should be.

right side is for the player with the most tenure, imo. more a sign of respect for the more and longer established vet. at least that is the way it has pretty much been here. i believe it's pretty much true in a lot of situations.

I would not say that its just that Rucker has the spot held down when peppers came along and when he left its just right to put Pep ageist the best T. Johnson subbed on the right side and the Left and Taylor played exclusively on the Right.

What is funny? Brayton is very solid against the run. He and Kemo anchored the left side of the line and gave up fewer rushing yards than Lewis and Peppers did last year. When Kemo went out he kicked inside and was very good against much heavier tackles having had experience as a DE in a 3-4 defense. I wouldn't be surprised to see him start on the left side again. Johnson will have to show that he can be stout against the run. Up to now he has not been.

As for Brown he will not start or even play that much except as a third down specialist or if we are way ahead. He will get abused for at least the first half of his rookie year.

i think he was referring to the nut-cracker incident.

    • I agree Tenn and Texas both got easy schedules    with these super conferences they need a way to force a play in towards the end.
    • I would still rather win a couple of games in this last 3. If we can't beat either Tampa or Arizona, I will go full tank mode for Atlanta. Which means we will win that game, obviously.
    • And he will likely be banged up over his career in the NFL but will always be able to produce when healthy because he is such a fundamentally sound player. This is the polar opposite of XL. His fundamentals are almost nonexistent. Those are things we have to attempt to develop. Sadly, these are the traits of a Day Three pick, not a first rounder.  Once again, I very much doubt history will be kind to taking a halfcourt shot on a high potential, extremely low floor player over a polished, NFL ready WR. I hope XL makes me eat those words but this just seemed like such a no-brainer move at the time. Same with the Frazier move over Brooks. The only pick I liked in this entire draft was Sanders. TBH, he was the only one that came close to proving his value, for that matter.
