Pro Football Weekly hearing Chip Kelly to the Panthers

With someone as tempo dependent as Cam is I could really see him thriving in this type of offense. Not to mention the game of professional football is changing to an offensive game. It will not be rare to have 5000 yd passers anymore. Defenses are handicapped and we'd be smart to take a look at a coach that's trying to take advantage.

this is what i was hoping we'd do all along with cam. get him in that high tempo offense.

i think the thing that will make it work in the NFL is the unrelenting nature and the mixing it up constantly. teams have no ability to adjust and if you are running practices at the same tempo you do in games then it's only natural that you'd be outlasting and just wearing down opposing defenses.

unless you are working at that tempo all the time you aren't going to be able to keep up with teams that do. and with them going no huddle there's no time for substitutions. no time to catch their breath. they snap the ball so quickly that defenses barely have time to get set and the QB is able to make a quick call on the line to take advantage of what they see and it's doubtful that defenses would be able to disguise what they do very often.

it's that whole philosophy that gets me excited.

to be honest, i'd be fine with someone else than kelly though he is by far my favorite candidate. the main thing i want is an aggressive system that keeps a fast tempo throughout the game. i mean if the pats and broncos can run the no huddle that much and keep going at that pace there's no reason that a young team like ours couldn't.

I am going to be up front and honest about how I view Chip Kelly as a Panthers coach and give you a glimpse into my future:

#1 I don't really want Chip Kelly and I am skeptical that his offense will work in the NFL

#2 If we do hire Chip Kelly, I will instantaneously drink the Kool Aid and call everyone dumb who thinks his offense won't work in the NFL because it has never been truly attempted before so you can't know if it will work or not.

#3 In year one while his offense is struggling I will talk about how hard it is to learn a new offense and that it is a process that will take time

#4 As his offense continues to struggle in year 2 I will become indifferent about the whole thing and rarely post about it

#5 When his offense continues to struggle I will instantaneously turn on him and bump old threads referring to #1 and say 'I never wanted him in the first place"

#6 If the offense ends up being dynamic and we start winning games and become awesome I will bump old threads referring to #2 and say "See I told you it could work"

Huddle strategery, years in advance ;)

I will be right no matter what. FTW!!!

May be post of the year a most huddlers

And to be clear, not a fan of Kelly as Panthers head coach.

Long held preference for guys that have worked their way up in the pro game. Yes, there are examples of successes and failures on both sides of the coin, but I think the transition from college to pro is tougher than that from coordinator/assistant to head coach.

Where I believe we failed with Rivera is the lack of anyone with head coaching experience on staff in order to help him with learning the job.

i don't agree with the bolded part at all, but i do agree with the rivera comment.

what i have said all along is that i don't love that kelly's got no NFL experience, but i think that there's not really that much that he'd have to adjust to if he's as bright as everyone who knows him, whose studied him, and who's worked with him. it will come rather easily. to make sure the transition is there, though, i absolutely want on his staff a lot of NFL experienced coaches who can act as advisors as far as getting used to the NFL goes. i think that's just as needed as rivera needed someone with HC experience on his staff.

i think some options would definitely be safer than kelly, but i doubt any has as high as a ceiling as he does. it's the same thing with newton. people were concerned about him being pro ready, that he wouldn't be able to do the same things in the pros that he did in college, that his lack of playing in a "pro system" (and i still laugh every time i see someone refer to the spread as anything other than a pro offense) was supposed to be something that held him back...but it didn't. he adjusted just fine and kelly would to. i know....being a coach is different than being a QB. what makes people successful, esp. in being a coach isn't the system they use, it's their use of it and the way they build their team and if they can get their team to buy into what they are doing and the ability to adapt what you do to make it work. i see no reason that kelly couldn't do that.

The only thing that scares me about this is getting older guys way out of college who have never dealt with this kind of offense trying to get used to it. I mean I don't know if I can see some of these guys giving 100% to something like this.

not sure they'd have a choice.

i'm sure the focus on building the team, tho, would be in finding people who fit that kind of system.

i think that the first offseason would be the toughest...just trying to get people to work at that pace and training camp would be brutal (although it'd sure be a whole lot more entertaining for spectators).

they'd get used to it, though, and you'd really see the difference it makes when the season started. he tries to get as many reps as possible in during practice time, which will make the system more familiar to the players and help with muscle memory.

i worry about guys like TD and beason who would probably struggle to keep up and i think some of the older guys on the team would absolutely have to go just because they don't fit that uptempo offense, but i think the team would be better.

Honestly if we end up hiring a Mike Zimme or Russ Grimm type clown I'll kill myself.

russ grimm and mike mccoy....mike tice...guys like that would make me jump ship. i'd either be jumping on the 49ers wagon or whatever team had big enough balls to hire kelly.

i'm just tired of safe and mediocre coaches.

what makes you think that kelly is trapped/locked into that read option stuff and that he wouldn't adapt?

he's already said he would and those who have worked with him said that he adapts what he does to the personnel he has.

i've said it before, the problem with chud was that he tried locking newton and the offense into some new creative mold where he should have just used an adaptable offense like he did last year...which is what kelly does.

he will have his own slant on things that will be different than most coaches in the league, but i can promise you that it won't be the exact same thing he does in oregon. the no huddle hurry up offense will probably be there as will his aggressive game management and it will be a spread of some kind, but it won't be the same thing.

he diagnoses what defenses does and then changes his play calling to take advantage of weaknesses they present and he allows the QB to make those calls on the line regularly.

chud was just to inflexible in what he was doing and was unwilling to deviate from his original plan. it wasn't the scheme that was the problem. it was the play-calling and game management.

If it happened I hope you're right. You're a logical poster who knows what's going on. If it happens we will see. I'm still on only for Shaw if its a college guy

the guy runs a tight, no nonsense program.

and i don't mean he's some strict disciplinarian, either. he knows how to maximize time both in games and in practice.

everything is about getting the most out of every minute whether in a game or in practice.

the thing i've heard about his practices is that they are as up-tempo as his games are.

i thought this was a great explanation of what his practices and his team culture is like from a NY Times piece

If JR goes the college route, CK is definitely at the top of my list.

Will be an interesting few months.

You're a bigger fan of college coaches than me. I know that

I also know I'll get behind whomever we hire, whether I agree or not.

(sadly, I have a fair share of experience in that practice)

My big question: Do you believe Richardson will be open to the idea of a college coach?

That's a question that I'd have to admit right now I'm not sure of the answer to.

Finally got a chance to watch the video.

Ok, think about it...the only way this could be true would be for JR to be the source and the guy pushing for Kelly. There is no one else in the organization right now that is going to have any significant input in our coaching hire.

That said, can any of you envision JR being enamored with Chip Kelly right now? I can't see it. That's not to say he might not be talked into Kelly if that is who the new GM really wants, but Nawrocki is saying we want him so bad we'll hire him before we have a GM.

Nolan needs to think through his "rumors" a little better in the future.
