Yasinkas: NFC South QB rankings

Recommended Posts

Brees was not a very good QB his first two years...that I can assure you. I think his passer rating was in the 70's and his third year in the 60's IIRC....

I have not said, and will not say that Brees is not a good QB, what I will say is that Brees is overrated in the media. Much like Ryan, Cutler, Favre, and Flacco.

2005 San Diego Chargers 16 16 323 500 64.6 3,576 7.2 24 15 27 223 89.2 21 49 2.3 1 8 5

2004 San Diego Chargers 15 15 262 400 65.5 3,159 7.9 27 7 18 131 104.8 53 85 1.6 2 7 2

2003 San Diego Chargers 11 11 205 356 57.6 2,108 5.9 11 15 21 178 67.5 21 84 4.0 0 5 3

2002 San Diego Chargers 16 16 320 526 60.8 3,284 6.2 17 16 24 180 76.9 38 130 3.4 1 2 0

2001 San Diego Chargers 1 0 15 27 55.6 221 8.2 1 0 2 12 94.8 2 18 9.0 0 2 0

Clearly he was absolutely terrible on the Chargers.

I swear we were separated at birth. :P

Lots of QBs have more physical skill than Jake. BUT...that doesn't mean they are better "QUARTERBACKS"...as in the whole package.

Well perhaps you have a different definition of that term than I do, a broader one. I mean it makes me puke when the media calls people "franchise QBs" too when they aren't anywhere near that in my eyes (Cutler for example).

Elite to me has more of an exclusivity to it, it isn't the same definition the media casually tosses out. It means that they have very few weaknesses mentally and physically and skill wise and have consistently played at a high level in the regular season and postseason and in the clutch regardless of the level of skill around them. Which means Tom Brady. Period. Postseason play, his attitude at times, and not knowing what Manning would do without a cadre of talent around him leaves him out, though I can't dispute his being second on the list. Rivers could move up there but not yet. I could see Rodgers getting there too. Perhaps Ryan ( another guy who rubs me the wrong way for some reason, he seems phony or something but again, that has nothing to do with how I evaluate him as a player). This is just off the top of my head, there may be more. If Brees gets better in the late and close aspect and would have some more playoff games to evaluate him on (which of course isn't his fault but neither is it Manning's fault that he has always been surrounded by talent) he would be there as well.

Also, just because someone is very good QB wise doesn't mean I would necessarily want him on my team over a guy who is below him...hence my preference for Rivers over Manning. How the guy fits the team, the money you have to put out, the intangibles, etc. It all goes into my opinion of who I want on my team.

I think that you are spot on with Brady, however I think that Rivers and Manning are elite, as think that they cannot be replaced by anyone better to fill their spot. Rodgers is up there on my book as well, but I need more game tape on both he and Ryan, but I do like the way he plays the game....what little I have seen.

His first and second full years of starting were pretty bad....so they drafted Manning for him to be replaced...he then started playing at a much higher level. I never said terrible.

I'm gonna go smoke but some of you guys are very wrong when you say Brees was no good for the Chargers. Now, would I take him on my team? No, because I hate the douche bag. In my opinion, which is the only one that should ever count. Jake is number 1 and he always gives it his all and practices hard. Why wouldn't you not want him?

So you'd rather Jake to Brees?

Remember about Brees, he spent his years in SD under 'Marty ball', not really known as a passer's offense.

That said, the first 3 rankings here appear sound. All others are backups or unknowns. No one knows how Tampa Bay's QB situation will pan out. I'm heartened that McKown is thought of so highly, but again, we won't know squat about him unless, and until, he's thrown full-blown ino the fire! Same with Moore.

Let's hear it then.

For god sakes.

Brady

Rivers

Manning

Roethlisberger

Warner

Rodgers

This is where I hit the log jam....so I am at 7 right now....and if I really thought about it...Brees could possibly jump both Warner and Rodgers, or maybe not....I would need to see the team.

Yeah, actually I would. I like Jake, he is a good guy and gives it his all. Not saying Bree's is not, I just like Jake and I'm proud to have him on my team. I believe Jake can win a Superbowl and also believe he gives us a better chance to win then anyone we could bring in right now. Yes, we lost in the playoffs but I'm just happy we got there, now lets hope we build on it.

I did not quibble with his being ranked #1 in the NFC South. You might have missed that post of mine though, not sure. Any QB who has to play from behind and has no run game will likely make more errors. I don't debate that. I never blame a QB for the performance of his defense either unless he is putting them in bad spots a lot. I am not trying to say that Brees is responsible in any way for the losses in the 4th when the D gives up the lead, not at all. But his 4th qtr #s don't have anything to do with W-L and to me, they don't lie. Some excel more in those situations than others and some get no kind of break for those circumstances. I think Brees gets too much of a pass for that area (late game play) for a guy people want to crown as elite. Not all QBs who throw that much have that high of an INT % either. I guess my point is more that he isn't ELITE not that he isn't a good QB.

You are the first Saints fan who actually admits that he throws some WTF passes though. Seems to be the short ones that he always lofts too high from what I have seen. Didn't Deuce eff up his knee going for one of those?

Who did that? Of course it isn't all him. Fact of the matter though is that his ratings in those situations have been like that over his whole career (lower than his overall rating), not just in NO.

Yep Deuce did have to go up for a high pass when he got injured. Thats not my problem with him, he is pretty accurate for the most part. Many QBs throw high passes look at Eli Manning for god sakes. My problem with Brees is when instead of throwing it away or taking the sack when hes being blitzed he tends to force it to anyone he can find, even if that means a reciever who is about to get Tboned by 2 DBs. Im not talking about a normal double coverage situation where there is a fight for the ball, but I have seen it time and time again where the DBs have read the receivers route perfectly and are in a full run at said reciever and Brees throws it to him anyway.

LOL @ Warner and Rodgers. Your list might be considered legit until then.
