Yasinkas: NFC South QB rankings

Recommended Posts

I didn't think Brees was horrible with the Chargers, just wasn't in the right system and not surrounded by at least mediocre receivers.

He was pretty bad, that I can assure you of.

Brees is not as good as the stats say. He seems to perform at his best when he is not under pressure, say, the start of the season, and 1st quarter. He does not do well when the going gets tough.

Not who I want "leading" my team.

I don't think he was BAD in SD though you have seen far more of him than I, fuzz so I defer to your knowledge. I thought of him as around average to above average there. But you do have a point about his performance in pressure situations from what I have seen.

I have to say that his extreme passer rating differential between home and away is not something one would expect in an elite QB, nor is it something that shouldn't factor in to one's opinion of him. One of many reasons I HATE DOMES (Yes I know that one of his away games in the division was also in a dome). They inflate QB ratings IMO. Domes are a baseball like variance in playing field and I hate baseball.

Was he? He essentially started 4 years in San Diego. He made a probowl following the 2004 season.

He had a mediocre season, a bad season (with 11 starts), a Pro Bowl season, and an above average season with the Chargers

As for the "not at his best under pressure"... did you already block the 20 point comeback he led us to in week 17 against the Panthers (throwing 3 TDs in the 4th quarter.. By the way)? Also check out the Bears game, 1st Bucs game, Falcons game, and Broncos game for 4th quarter comebacks (unfortunately our kicking game and defense still managed to lose 2 of those).

It's a shame our defense was unable to stop opposing teams from waltzing down the field to kick the game winning FG after a Brees go-ahead TD.

Regardless, both of your statements were unsubstantiated and ridiculous.

I think Brees needs his respect because he is a good QB. Right now he is in the right system also so that mean he gets too much cred because he always has the ball. The bottom line is I would not be unhappy to have him as our QB. Nor am I unhappy with Jake because he is a good QB also.

Jake-#3

McCown-#4-surprised to see him ahead of his brother and the plethora of QBs in TB

More shoddy work from this "award-winning" journalist. It seems that Mark Brunell no longer has a first name, nor do two of the other QBs on the list. And here's an absolute howler of a split infinitive:

"Freeman has the talent to someday top this list."

Shockingly poor work.

It isn't simply the 4th Q, it's late and close where he suffers.

2008:

10 games, 78.3 QBR, 36-60 for 60% comp, 458 yards, 4 tds 4 ints. That's almost 20 pts below his 2008 QBR. His career late & close QBR is about 7 pts lower than his career QBR.

He's a great leader! Don't you watch ESPN? A lot of people don't know this but he actually leads the team in pre game yelling!

I hate the aints but have to admit Drew Brees is a great QB. But as always with the Saints, it appears that they always have a fatal flaw in their team that hurts them severely especially late in games. Last few years its been Defense and Special teams. It looks like they have tried to address those problems over last 2 years free agency and draft. However as usual with high scoring explosive offensive teams, the defense doesn't play with the intensity it needs too throughout the year. Its always, its ok ..the offense is gonna put up points. I think as games get tougher and have more meaning its hard to change that mentality.

He is a Chargers fan too, so he probably has seen more of Brees than 90% of Saints fan have.

I remember when the Saints played against the Chargers in 2004.

I think Brees threw 4 TDs against us.

I would imagine he has seen more games than most Saints fans... but I don't buy that Brees was "pretty bad".

He played 4 seasons with the Chargers... 79TD 53 INT. Had about an 85 passer rating over those 4 seasons. Over 60 percent completion rate.

He wasn't a Pro Bowler with the Chargers (oh wait, he WAS one year)... but he definitely wasn't "pretty bad"

I don't disagree with you TheDeuce. I said earlier what I thought of his tenure in SD. Fact is though, AJ Smith at least didn't think he was good enough to prevent his drafting a 1st round QB. And he was young then, not a guy you do that with to have the next guy in line. I am not so certain that had Rivers not held out, he may have "won" the job in 2004. I know Marty loved Brees, but I think it's pretty obvious that AJ rules all in that franchise.
