Goodell wants to expand playoffs?

it's the competition committee suggesting the rules and the owners voting on them.

The responses here really highlight the fact that people in general eschew the "read then think then understand then post" paradigm.

Expanding the playoffs by one team per conference does not mean teams with losing records will be in, it means more teams with winning records will make it. It means that teams that are 2nd or 3rd in their division with a great record wont be boxed out by a division winner with a mediocre record.

It doesn't expand the season and only means one more game for one more team, the # 2 seed. Instead of a bye they have to play in with the number 7 seed ON WILDCARD WEEKEND.

It in no way dilutes the product or makes 8-8 the target season.

This has literally NO downside and all upside.

Interesting he releases this after the huge PR hit his image has taken the past couple of days.

It looks like the Saints bounty thing has blown up in his face. He's loss the respect of his peers and subordinates so maybing make an appeasement to the fans will help him recover a bit of face.

I like Goodell's firm stance on player discipline, but he hasn't been a very adequate commish.

I don't think he's the devil, but I haven't seen an improved product...I've seen lip service to players about safety issues... fining the shiat out of people for legal hits while the league ecschews any responsibility. I've seen the game continue to become slower and more commercialized, constantly repackaged for people who mistake a high score for a good game... I mean, it certainly could be worse... but the only thing the league has done that has made me happy in a while has been putting the superbowl in new york.

In my opinion, if it was to go to 20, to me the regular season games doesn't mean anything if 20 out 32 is going to the playoffs. I'm OK with 8 teams per conference but pushing it to 10 teams per conference is pushing it a little bit but I agree with everything you have said thus far. I just differ from you on this point.

TV contracts are some of the biggest ever penned.

The league is in more households every week than ever before.

Players are better protected than ever before.

Players are richer than ever before.

But you dont get to see someone carted off the field every week with their career and future in doubt.

man, you're pissy today...that's not what i'm saying at all. I have no problem with player safety... I think it's really important that the game evolve... but not reactionarily... every move they've made thus far has been to protect their brand, not the players. With one hand they fine players for things that aren't against the rules, plays that don't even draw flags on the field...with the other they cover up and deny allegations and excise any responsibility for concussions and the damage they cause... all the while pushing to expand regular season play, denying benefits for those who HAVE suffered and fighting against protection for defensive players. They aren't trying to make the game safer... they're trying to protect their asses.

There is just this crazy rush here over the last few months to paint Goodell out to be the harbinger of doom for the NFL and I for one just dont see it.
