Sporting News article on Cam with a great reminder

It's real easy to forget this point:

"With apologies to his time at Blinn College, this is just Newton’s third season as big-time starting quarterback. He had one amazing season at Auburn and a memorable rookie season for the Panthers in 2011. And now he’s 13 games into his second NFL season...He’s not Superman just yet, no matter how many times he does his best man of steel imitation after scoring a touchdown."

Barely halfway through his THIRD season as a starting QB outside of highschool and JUCO.

The future is bright. Man we are so lucky to have this guy.

Why can't folks let this kid have fun? He is a Superman for this team. God knows he doing more than simply throwing a ball. I don't get the constant desire to undermine everything Cam does. Especially when these r the same folks who already have Luck in the HOF from college and has turned The Golden Calf of Bristol into an Icon even thou he has only won 6 games in two seasons. And 4 of those wins were more do to the defense holding their opponents to low scores.

What's even more troubling and obvious is how extremely critical many of those in the media have been towards Cam in an attempt to make their more chosen QBs look good. I simply don't get the endless jealousy and Master like attitude towards this kid from the day go. They act like he's some prison or something that they have to keep an eye on. Nothing stereotyping about that sort of attitude.

A lot of members of the media, the majority of whom just so happen to be white guys that probably weren't allowed to play contact sports as children, do have a personal grudge against Cam it seems. I know this has been beat to death but it is astounding.

Just another example, last night I stayed up to like 1am just to see the top plays on sportscenter, expecting Cam to be #1.

Anyway, his run ended up #2 somehow, but besides the point the anchor praised Smith's blocking the whole time, then said something to the effect of "Smith with the amazing block, which allowed Newton to do his ACT".

The anchor said the "act" part with a certain venom to his voice, like he was disgusted to have to watch Newton have success. Really is pretty sickening.

It'll be funny to go back and read these threads in a year or two when ESPN does a 180 and worships Cam.

great read.

loved this...

Sparked by their quarterback, the Panthers (4-9) produced a convincing 30-20 victory over a Falcons team that entered the game with an 11-1 record. “I tell Cam all the time, that positive energy he brings is as valuable as his athleticism and his physical features,” Carolina left tackle Jordan Gross said. “He has a way of getting everybody around him excited about the game and believing that we can make good things happen.”

.

.

.

“He’s played so great the last few weeks,” Gross said. He’s done a great job on the sidelines. No complaints. He’s been a lot of fun to play for, and he’s gotten us out of trouble in past games when we’ve let protection slip by us. He made some huge plays today with his feet. He’s doing a great job.”

i've thought that same thing. he's been demonstrating that talent quite a bit, but what has been missing is the attitude that i saw at auburn. it's special and there's really no other way to describe it. he's dynamic and can make the people around him believe they can do great things. when he's on, he is ON.

i guess the key is allowing him the freedom to be him and by that i mean, don't try to create something special with him as QB (chud, i'm looking at you), but fit something around him that he can thrive in and by doing that the whole offense will thrive.

make it simple.

make it fit.

make it flexible.

make it quick.

and cam will make it dominant.

he's got the ability to make bad coaches look mediocre, mediocre coaches look good, and good coaches look great. all he needs is the freedom to make jaw dropping plays. don't force him into something, just give him room.

i think that's what the coaching staff is learning. it's what they did last year.

cam will learn a lot of stuff on the way...his mechanics will improve (some). his accuracy will improve (though he'll never be a surgical strike guy, but then he doesn't need to be). his ability to read defenses will for sure improve and he'll get to where he really frustrates and confuses them because they don't know what aspect to defend and there will be too many options to know what to look for.

we just don't need some bland, easy to diagnose, predictable offense. we don't need to fit/force him into some more traditional QB mold. we just need to let him be the superstar and wins will come.

people will hate it, esp. non-panther fans and football purists who can't stand QBs doing anything but standing tall in the pocket and who don't like the idea of the QB being used to run the ball, and don't like that college style offenses are coming into the league (even tho they've been here for years and been incredibly successful). even then, tho, the wins will bring respect.

we are so lucky to have Cam. Look around at the league and the turds playing at the position... and you're telling me people complain about this guy? Only solace to take in it is that it happens in EVERY nfl fan base.... Bengals fans complain about Dalton, Cowboys fans about Romo, Giants fans used to dog eli relentlessly. It happens everywhere. Its life of the NFL. But I wouldn't trade this guy for the world.
