I Saw Gettis On The Sideline

Gettis will be here at least through camp next year unless we trade him. He is on a rookie contract and cheap. If he doesn't play it is because he isn't the best player we have to choose from. The whole notion that the coaches put talented guys in the doghouse over a comment or two when they are clearly the best player is ridiculous in my estimation.

Trade a 6th round WR who has played 1 season in 3 years?

New GM IMO means he may find his own lower tier players to battle for spots rather than just letting so many of Hurney's guys compete.

I think we see a big shift away from the Hurney roster soon

It's amazing how much love Gettis gets on this forum. It's as if he is a probowl receiver or something! Backups are always the most popular players..

The way he played his rookie season, with crappy QBs, is the reason people got very excited about him. He is big runs a 4.3, has incredible hands, a great vertical, catches the ball in traffic. He was a lot better than LaFell. He also got high praise from Steve Smith. Smith called him the team's best deep ball threat. I think fans just want to see him play and see what he can provide us. I hate to see his skills just rotting away on the sideline and instead we have Armanti Edwards in the game. Just give him a shot and throw the ball to him a few times and let's see what he can do.

No way....LaFell was more well rounded as a rookie. Like in baseball, chicks dig the deep ball. That was all Gettis displayed really. He poorly used his big body as a rookie when given the chance....and isn't as athletic overall as LaFell.

And Gettis didn't do diddly poo with Clausen. He caught one big ball from BSP....that isn't doing lots of work with bad QBs.

I don't know why you insist on hating Gettis, but he was better than Lafell their rookie years

Not hating on him.

As rookies, he ran a better deep go route than LaFell.....LaFell showed more promise doing the rest.

As rookies...

Better runner with the ball? Easily LaFell, he has a little RB flavor to him in space.

Better using his body and going after all ball? LaFell

Better blocker? LaFell.

Said it this offseason, two most overhyped things in Carolina became Chud and Gettis. Claiming someone is overhyped is not hating on them....it isn't saying the over the top claims....are over the top. He isn't in the doghouse....he can't prove in practice to be worthy of reps over some very average WRs. He needs to be able to do more than streak down the sideline in this offense ( OL rarely can hold up for those plays anyway)

We will bring 88 guys to camp next year. With a very tight cap next year he will likely have to keep our guys on rookie contracts especially with the potential of a guy like Gettis. They are cheap and at least decent backups. He will be dumping big veteran salaries if he can, not focusing on the small beans of a contract like Gettis. Most of any team's roster is filled with journeymen and backups like Gettis not stars.

I think we see a healthy mix of parting with some big names and lower tier players.

Hurney would have a job if the right players where in Carolina.....they aren't. That means new GM will most likely do a lot more than just draft a new class to add to the Hurney bunch.

Reason why have struggled so often isn't having the wrong superstars....but IMO the rest of the roster is weak. We have had bad depth and weak 2nd tier players.

I don't think that the issue is that he couldn't find talent or even get the right guys. The problem is that he failed to meld his idea of wanting to keep guys like Stewart and Williams with the offense continuing to run a run-heavy scheme. Chud and Hurney were on opposites ends of the spectrum as far as what they were doing. Since it was Hurney's thing to manage he was let go.

Based on the injuries we have had to key plays and how the backups played the past few weeks, the depth looks pretty good.

LaFell had stones hands his rookie season. There's a reason Gettis was starting over LaFell.

No WR did diddly poo with Clausen. Clausen has yet to throw a TD to a WR. Jeff King and Mike Goodson were his safety valves.

Gettis had success with Moore and BSP. But you feel he should be judged by his time with Clausen? Good thing it wasn't up to you if we kept Smitty after playing with Clausen.

I am not ready to throw dirt on any WR we have. Depending on whether or not we aggressively go after an every down playmaker at the WR position, I don't think we'll necessarily get rid of any of them, and if we do it will probably be Edwards, Gettis or Pilares considering what LaFell and Murphy have done as of late.

On an off note, If Gettis emerges and we pick up another legitimate threat, this is the only way I see Smitty moving to the slot. Otherwise I would assume that Gettis and Smitty would be on the outside while either LaFell or Adams would be in the slot.

Gettis was in for 4 straight plays if I recall, because I literally had to make sure I was remembering "12" was "Gettis".

He was spread way out wide to the left like 3-4 straight times near the end of the first half.

I was happy to seem him out there.. but Cam didn't look his way even once.

Then I was looking for him the rest of the game and didn't see him on the field.

I can't wait to see him actually catch a pass... Maybe against the Raiders? Who knows... All I know is if he's on the field and makes a catch in BofA, the place could explode. LOL
