The Truth about Cam Newton and the Panthers

What is the truth? Seems like a simple enough question, but not a so simple answer.

The Truth about Cam Newton in regards to how he's played this season?

That it doesn't matter. 2nd year slumps for QB's is not unheard of by any stretch of the imagination, Teams around the League now have tape on Cam's first season, they have picked up on his tendencies and exploited them, the fact that this season for Cam Newton isn't as good as last, is the least shocking thing in the history of anything. and Cam is going to have to learn to adjust to it.

Current starting QB's that have had Sophomore slumps: Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Sam Bradford and Drew Brees.

Josh freeman, Big Ben and Eli Manning had Junior Slumps

NFL QB's are usually adjusting to the NFL over their first 4 years in the league, with normally not seeing their better years as a starter until years 4-6.

it is important more important how Cam Newton is playing in years 4-6 then what he plays now because then he will be past his learning stage of his career, basically what we have in year 4 is what we got.

With that being said, Cam's QB Rating right now is 85.8 and last season was 84.5, if you adjust his QB rating to include his Rushing TD's his QB rating last year was 93.5 and this year 91.4. so either way you could say he's either slightly ahead of last year or slightly behind last year

Now the truth about the team, the Panthers know the long term success of the franchise, not only monetarily concerned but also just in winning games , playoff games and maybe even a Super Bowl depends on Cam Newton staying a Carolina Panther, if he leaves after year 6 then all of this has been for nothing.

As the saying goes Rome wasn't built in a day ya'll

The Panthers know this better then anyone and will move accordingly, our teams focus is not on this year, or next for that matter but really we are looking at years 4, 5, 6. for Cam Newton, those are the important ones, those are the ones we will actually be needing to be making the playoffs and winning games in the Playoffs, because if we are not winning by then, Cam Newton is going to leave Carolina LeBron James style and go to the best situation he believes he needs to go to.

and I know Cam's contract runs out after 4 years, but because of CBA rules and the Franchise tag there are really 2 more years on the contract, for 6 years total.

3 more years. Player can be franchised a max of 3 times in his career according to current CBA rules and Drew Brees challenge to the meaning of the rule back in the summer. So Cam is stuck here for 7 years if Panthers are willing to tag him 3 times after rookie contract.

He's a great player and hope he stays...but also hope he matures. If he doesn't mature into a leader then he'll never win a superbowl. IMO for him to do that he needs to stop doing a bunch of the amateurish crap and focus on winning games. I'm sick of him celebrating every first down...leave that to the WRs. There are more demands mentally and physically for a QB and losing focus because you are happy you got a first down isn't the way to run a team. IMO its part of the reason he sucks at game winning drives..

So...I'll be ecstatic if this guy is the face of the franchise for the next decade or more. But he's gotta start doing the things that the great QBs do to win games. Right now he isn't doing it.

I will say that it's not all on him...I'm nit picking. The defense has been horrible at the end of games as has the OL and WRs. I think that Cam's mentality about the game and the rest of this team will be fixed when Ron Rivera is fired and someone else is hired.

Cam. Is. Not. The. Problem.

Get new staff and you'll all be making excuses to why you said he sucks.

this may be a moot point because they are all probably gone at the end of the season anyway but...

I don't think Coaching staff is the Issue, we have the best DC of the last 10 years in the NFL as our HC, and Chud's running of the offense while has a few fans screaming he sucks has done a decent enough Job.

Ron Rivera didn't become the Panthers HC and suddenly forget how to Coach Defense, if he stays it will get better. there is just talent(Oline/WR/DB) gaps on offense and defense right now between where they are and where they need to be.

Cam has played very well the last few games. Hes missed some throws but hes still learning. Dude has ALL the talent in the world. Im getting tired of hearing about Cam this, Cam that, from the media. Whether its on field stuff or off the field stuff. Cam is the man and hes our QB. Get us while we are down.

    • Did I mention that he was on worse teams?  Yes.  Do QBs alone win games?  No.  Did Cam, on a much better team with some awesome defenses ever have 2 consecutive winning seasons?  No.  So now you are cherry picking,  If the overall stats are similar, you take a look at him.   I told you that you look at his skill set---but you wanted to tell me that he sucks and mentioned performance.  I just presented performance--and his numbers are very similar to Cam Newton's numbers--a player most call the best Panther QB ever--and I agree.  By the way, Fumbles are evidence of how bad his OL has been--so you are saying that a QB in a situation worse than Cam's who has stats and physical abilities very similar to Cam's should not be given a look when you have Bryce Young at QB?  You are going with that story because you simply talked your way into a corner and now you are trying to save face.  No good GM would do what you suggest because "he sucks."  Sorry, but the facts do not support you.  But no matter what eye-opening details I provide, there are some who are going to go their Google machines to try to find some reason to support an ignorant approach to developing the QB position.  You ignored the similarities to Cam and went cherry picking.  I know what you are doing--but I am only suggesting (as I have stated before) that we bring him in as one of three approaches to resolving the QB issue. Compete with Bryce and draft a QB. Basically, I am suggesting that Jones has the potential to replace Dalton and compete with Young.  He is a battered stock that could get better in a better situation--that is human nature.  Instead, I am called a Daniel Jones lover and superfan.  That is good debate--But a real sign of mature thinking is the inability to LOGICALLY consider alternative perspectives--which is actually a characteristic of intelligence.  Just so you know, I critique and perform research in my job.  I am often amazed at how the numbers do not support my suppositions.  I learned that my impression is often wrong until I look at the data.  In this case, I have considered all the important variables and he should get a shot.  Numbers don't lie--and when you and others resort to twisted name calling directed toward the poster--it verifies my position.
    • I don’t get this, I know that is the popular thought process but I just don’t think it’s true.  For instance head to head last year the ACC had a winning record against the SEC.  The SEC had a losing record in bowl games. This year so far the head to head is 2-3 SEC and that’s with a fluke Vandy win in week one.  I see the ACC taking another head to head winning season after next week.  The SEC is mostly hype with 3 good teams, in my opinion.  But to say any ACC team would get exposed I believe is a stretch
    • What the hell?  How is presenting Cam's stats hating him?  The point is not to hate Cam, it is to show you how similar Jones is to him and why you take a look at him.  I mentioned Jones has the skill set to take a look--the response is, "look at his 5 years of performance."  So I compare him to the greatest QB in franchise history, and the stats are similar--while Jones was in a worse situation.  Now that is "hating?"  Come on.  This is a meritless, ignorant, personal attack because you are wrong.  Just stop it.  You all attack the poster when you have nothing.  So saying "we should consider a guy with similar stats and size to Cam Newton" is now hating Cam and making me a Jones super fan- that is just stupid.
