i think the cheifs slowly circle the toilet bowl after this. coaches are going to be frazzeled, guys aren't really going to be as focused as they might if this was just a sudden death of a teammate ala sean taylor or chris henry. they're going to be constantly assaulted from the backs of their minds (as anyone in the situation would be) by the fact that the guy who they emotionally feel pulled to rally around actually murdered the mother of a baby and a toddler in front of her mother.

i don't think that's something you just tune out.

Sounds like the team is in total shock. He was close with Crennel, team captain at Maine, thought of as a great guy by all. Actions were completely out of left field apparently.

Chiefs-Panthers game appears to be on schedule

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher this morning shot and killed his girlfriend before going to Arrowhead Stadium and fatally shooting himself as team personnel tried to stop him, police said.

Police Capt. David Lindaman said Belcher, 25, and his girlfriend, 22, got into an argument around 7 a.m. at their home in the 5400 block of Crysler Avenue in Kansas City. Around 7:50 a.m., Lindaman said, Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Lindaman said Belcher’s mother, who was visiting the couple and their 3-month-old daughter, witnessed the shooting and was being interviewed by police.

Belcher left the scene on Crysler and went to the Chiefs practice facility at Arrowhead, police said.

Police were called to the stadium around 8:10 a.m. When Belcher arrived there he encountered General Manager Scott Pioli, Coach Romeo Crennel and other team personnel. Police said Chiefs staff attempted to keep Belcher from committing additional acts of violence. When police arrived, they heard a gunshot and found that Belcher had shot himself in the head.

The Chiefs released the following statement: “We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorites in their investigation.”

Belcher, originally from Long Island, N.Y., had been with the Chiefs for four years. He joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Maine.

There are a lot bigger things to think about in this situation than who wins the game tomorrow.

Not really. This happens every day in this country. Other businesses do not close down. The NFL is no different or no more special than the rest of the country.

The best thing that can come from this is maybe some national attention how how mental disorders are real and should be treated as such.

I feel bad for his teammates, the victim's family, etc.

But I'm not going to make this a "Javon Belcher tribute weekend". I hope we play tomorrow and I hope we win. C'mon now, not the time to get holier than thou. If the game goes on tomorrow its okay to speculate what effect this event will have on the game. That's all I'm doing.

Most people would say "the odds swing heavily in favor of the panthers'. I think the opposite. If the game is played I think the Chiefs will play hard for Crennel, etc.

I don't really care that much who wins tomorrow, not in the light of something like this.

The murderer is dead. Nothing much left there other than to wonder why.

The victim, the baby, the families...those are the ones at the center of this story.

Honestly think they should postpone the game. Not fair to expect the coaching staff to be able to prepare and lead tomorrow just witnessing one of their players blow their brains out right in front of them. Not to mention their practice area is a crime scene and everything that will go along with that.

I believe the game will go on. Whether it should is a matter that can be debated, though there's little point. Tomorrow it either will or won't - by all accounts, will - and then the debate will be moot.

Regardless, the human beings at the center of the story are what matter. The game is just a game.

People witness murders & suicide every single day. Welcome to the real world. It isn't all rainbows & unicorns. Last summer I witnessed my life long best friend slit his own throat days after he caused a car wreck that killed his son & wife. I don't recall my job or bills being put on hold for me. Life goes on.

No need to glorify or mourn over a possible murderer & coward. He's as worthless as the guys at columbine, 9/11, or any other incident.

Yes I have played football, and many other sports. Your example has zero similarity, and it actually validates my point. The chiefs will get crushed tomorrow. They will play but it wont be nearly to their fullest.

I'm not trying to compare the two situations. It's obvious that the two are different. All i'm saying is that things like this can easily get a team to rally. It's about emotions.
