The Best Time To Fire A Head Coach

Radio host Steve Czaban and I were trying to figure out whether it's better to shitcan a coach midseason, or whether or not you wait it out until the bitter end to make your move. Here are the mitigating factors when deciding to terminate with extreme prejudice:

Funny yet actually contains some pretty relevant points.

Im in the minority on this one Im sure, but when a season is 'lost' (aka no shot at playoffs) why not get rid of the dead weight, get the new head coach in and evaluate players mid-season to see what he has in game situations? Can help him plan for training camp to see what adjustments are needed in certain positions and also plan what he thinks the team will need to succeed next season.

The only problem with that is if you were looking at/wanting a guy that is already coaching somewhere, you'd have to wait till the end of the season before the coach you wanted could leave that job to come to the new job...same with wanting to get a coordinator a head coaching spot, need to wait until the season is over so he can be available

problem with midseason firings, is that sometimes the interim coach has success and gives a false sense of security and often the following year, the teams sucks again.

end of the season is best and most ideal.

unless you have someone on your staff that can take over and make the team better quickly, i don't see much sense in firing mid season...esp. if you have no hope of the playoffs.

i most certainly don't want to hire mid season because then you are shutting out most of the good prospects that you should be at least looking at. i don't even like hiring until after the superbowl just to make sure we've looked at every potential coach. only problem with that, tho, is people get impatient and want action, regardless if it's the smartest or most prudent course of action.

firing mid season should only be done in extreme situations...and no, "we have no hope of the playoffs and i'm pissed" is not an extreme situation.

Nothing like a Vikings fan writer Drew Magary saying there is no such thing as an interim who can win...

When Leslie Frazier is a pretty damn good interim who came to be a HC. Dumbass

12-20 record as a HC. 3-13 last year.

just saying...

regardless, more than likely you aren't going to/shouldn't hire an interim to be full time HC because it will probably be a mistake. frazier may have turned things around some this year (6-4 so far) but the jury is still out on him.

Also in Drew Magary humor:

Other things that makes Jerry Richardson clutch his chest in horror:

• Interracial couples holding hands

• Paying workers a fair wage

• The combined salaries of the Panther running backs

Ron should have been canned after the Broncos game...

All you do by keeping him through the end of the schedule is give him a chance to beat other bad teams (a la the Eagles, Chiefs, and Raiders). Those wins prove nothing and if he reaches 7 wins just puts doubt in the mind of the owner...when there should be no doubt that this guy needs to go.
