Jordan Officially Interested In Changing Name to Hornets

My final position on it is this:

If we can get Benson to sell the entire Charlotte portion of the Hornets history to us and I mean everything (logos, colors, mascot, player history, "The Hive", all their trademarks, jerseys, court design, Ric Flairs Woo) etc etc, then I'm on board. I want the team to be connected to the 90s Hornets team, records combined. Dell Curry becomes the all team leading Hornets scorer, not all time leading Pelicans scorer. etc. If we're going to take a new identity, take it all and fully embrace it. Become the Charlotte Hornets, not the knockoff Charlotte Hor-nots.

If we can't get that to happen, move on. The entire movement is built on the already flimsy notion of nostalgia bringing fans back on board. If all we get is a name but have to settle for a complete logo redesign, different mascot, no tributes to 90s team, different jerseys, its gonna be a major flop and disappointment. If this is the scenario, move on with the Bobcats, and MJ needs to come out and say the Hornet thing is dead.

Either way, end the identity crisis around this team. Take it all or move on.

The old bobcat uniforms were crap but the new jerseys and court has kinda grown on me. Saying that I do think changing the name would spark some interest. I believe it would be a good story and some gear would be bought (id buy a hornets shirt).

However I do not think changing the name is going to be the saviour of this franchise. Fielding a good product is going to turn this ship around.

Ha, what if the Suns changed their name to the 'Gentrys' - that would be gentrification on so many levels.

But really, re-branding is of absolute no concern to the people that try to make the product on the floor better. A lot of people in this movement that I have spoken to can't even name 5 players on the current Bobcats roster. Yet they are so adamant about a name change.

If it happens, it happens - but real fans of this franchise should be more concerned about the teams progress rather than the brands progress.

Not true. We identify with the brand of our teams as they represent us. By your logic it would be of no consequence if the Tarheels were no longer the Tarheels, or the Blue Devils the Blue Devils. In business....branding is one of the absolute most important things. If Metallica changed their name do you think they would be as popular?

The point is this......the city always has been more invested in the Hornets and when they left it took something out of Charlotte. Remember LJ, Alonzo, and Mugsy painted on the side of that building? It will come back when the Hornets come back. We will be an NBA city again. I just really don't think you understand the implications. I would actually bet it would have an impact on our ability to sign free agents, season ticket sales would go up. They sell more Hornets hats then Bobcats hats right now and the Hornets aren't even in Charlotte. We would get more national attention. The rebranding would undoubtedly provide more revenue for the team which directly impacts the product on the court.

Agreed, BUT I also see his point as well. There will be no reason to rebrand if the product you put out on the court is poo. But, I think you're right..as silly as it may be..the rebrand is actually exactly what the Bobcats need. Also, it's great timing..as it seems to me..they are starting to find their own.

I agree that ultimately the focus should be on having a good team. But the rebranding isn't a detracting force. It enhances the product. Yes it is good timing, but even if the Bob's were the worst team in the league this year it would still be a good idea.

Well of course.. apparently we are all still living in the past with the thought of The Hornets rushing through our nostalgic brains. I can't wait to see it happen as I know it will be at least a boost in fan attendance amongst other things.

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
