Jordan Officially Interested In Changing Name to Hornets

The "Hornets" nickname came from The Revolutionary War. At the time Charlotte was described as "a hornet's nest of rebellion." More obviously, the team mascot "Hugo" was named after the massive hurricane that hit the Carolina's in the late 80's. The Hornets belong in Charlotte. "Bobcats" just represents a complete failure & the piss poor man who owned it. Not to mention how egotistical he was naming them after himself.

The Charlotte Hornets had more support than any other NBA team for over a decade. Fan attendance was the best in the NBA the entire 90's & "the hive" was a true homecourt advantage. Michael Jordan knows it & will make this happen. I read an article this summer in which he described playing in Charlotte during his Chicago days. He said they didn't look forward to trips to NC, regardless of how good the Hornets were, because the fans were always there & always making noise.

The first game in TWC Arena with our boys in teal & purple will be amazing. That place will be jam packed & absolutely rocking.

Man, I hope this happens sooner rather than later... I remember being a kid back during the 90's Jordan era and the Hornets were fugin poppin'. And back when I actually cared about Charlotte basketball. I guess it didn't hurt their popularity that their team color was like the color of the 90's.

I know you fugers remember those windbreaker jackets.

It will never happen, all of you guys desires are clearly driven by the fact that you are racist and this nothing more than an attempt at gentrification of the franchise. /sarcasm

Can't wait for the Hornets name to come home!

The only gentrification of this franchise is a man being so egotistical & self-loathing as to name a professional sports team after himself.

Ha, what if the Suns changed their name to the 'Gentrys' - that would be gentrification on so many levels.

But really, re-branding is of absolute no concern to the people that try to make the product on the floor better. A lot of people in this movement that I have spoken to can't even name 5 players on the current Bobcats roster. Yet they are so adamant about a name change.

If it happens, it happens - but real fans of this franchise should be more concerned about the teams progress rather than the brands progress.

I can name just about everybody who has ever played on this roster. I am more concerned with wins than anything else. I'm very much interested in once again cheering for a team called the Charlotte Hornets.

I can't effect who the team drafts, which players they sign or the contracts they give. What I can effect (maybe) is the branding of this franchise.

MJ, himself said the community spoke and he will listen. If there is a change, it will be because the fans and citizens of Charlotte asked for it and MJ as a good owner gave the fans what they wanted. I can't think of a better way an owner can show the fans that their opinion matters.

Yea - I wasn't saying anyone specifically - I just talk to a lot of people that are for a re-brand that just want it for the name change and really don't have much vested in the team (not on this board - just in general). I spoke to a friend a few weeks ago that wants the Hornets name back and could only name Kemba as a player on the roster.

I'm focused on the product and am infinitely happier with what is on the floor compared to last year.

This is very true. Unfortunately, these fans make up a large portion of fans in general. The fans mean a lot in terms of ticket sales, merchandise sales, and the overall support and financial health of an NBA team. Teams have low attendance during lean times because the band wagon fans stay home and the only fans in the building are high identification fans.

I am all for the viability and health of Charlotte/Carolina's sports..the high identification fans don't care about a rebrand. It appears that in order to move fans from low iD (those in favor of a rebrand and can't name but only a few people on the team) to high iD (those who are hardcore basketball fans and into the success of the team on the court)..a rebrand to a proven logo/name might be too good of an opportunity to pass up.

As a high iD fan...I am in favor of the rebrand because it will increase the chance of creating more high ID fans, by drawing in the lower ID fans based off the name. The chance for increased merchandise sales is high and hopefully a boost in ticket sales and revenue for the Charlotte franchise.

IMO.
