How will our cap problems will influence the draft and the roster?

From what I have read we are currently 5 million over the cap.The new GM will have some tough decisions to make regarding who we can keep on the roster.

It appears to me that Gamble and Gross are two of the biggest liabilities in terms of the cap.Many of the big contracts we signed such as Dwill and Beason are so recent it does not give us the cap relief that Gross and gamble will.Others with medium cap implications are James Anderson and Ron Edwards.The way I see it we are in big trouble next year.I do not see Gross and Gamble taking a pay cut given they are in the backside of our career.

With that said it may effect our draft priorities.If we were to cut Gross we would certainly sign a LT.

I know some of you have a good understanding of how the cap works and the financial decisions that will have to be made. In the past Hurney could massage the contracts but the recent over payment of some players have JRs signature written all over them and may inhibit us from building on to what we have now.

Thoughts on what scenarios we may face next year?

If we want to do anything in FA then we'll obviously have to make some cuts to either the roster or contracts. However, in doing so you have to make sure you're not creating more holes.

I would be shocked if it affected the draft at all.

The effect on the roster will be profound if the new GM is worth his salt. There is going to be more than one player jettisoned this offseason that isn't really a bad player but isn't worth how much we're paid them.

I agree that it will come down to business decisions more so than his past performance but having said that, could that not effect the talent we will be looking for in the draft? If we have to cut Gross we would surely have to look at a starting LT.

We need to get one of the posters here who has access to the dollar figures for all Panthers contracts..(players/coaches)

since we have people on here screaming ...fire him or cut him or he has to restructure his contract, yada,yada, yada.....

Lets see what our new GM really has to work with. Lets see what the cap hit is for players to be released or what will it

cost to restructure contracts.........then lets see what will it cost to jettison the entire coaching staff.

I'm not quite sure if some of the people screaming so loudly know what replacement cost is.........but they need to.

Rayzor, the voice of reason. The cap is nothing but a fancy loophole that any GM worth his weight in Pecan Pie can tame rather easily.

As far as the draft goes, you draft BPA, not by need. Drafting by need leads to Eric Shelton in the 2nd round. Excuse me, I just threw up in my mouth.

The three best options concerning relieving the cap is trading Gamble, Gross, and releasing Edwards. That should be a start.

All or nearly all the contract info is available to anyone online. It just takes patience to pick through it and a little research to figure out the impact on the cap should you cut or trade the player.

its just not something i'm worried about nor do i think its something that will or should set the team back or delay progress much at all.

The NFL salary cap last year was $120.37 million, this year $120.6 million. It's expected to stay pretty much the same and only make another similar small increase.
