Busy day for Bears

Florio's article actually says the same thing, and for the moment, I'd agree.

For me, it's one of those things I just make a mental note of. I'm still not sold on Cutler being the Bears savior at QB. I hope he turns out to be the next Jeff George, i.e. a guy who should be great but somehow never quite gets to that level.

(description that could also fit a certain franchise DE)

Is this what you were really trying to say?

What ever happened to Rex Grossman?

Apparently, he's set to try out for the UFL or whatever it's called... which, I, personally think is BS. I can't believe that he's the 97th worst QB available.

Is he still the president of the "F*ck it I'm going deep" club?

fug yeah.

Nope. Said exactly what I meant.

The Bears gave up a boatload to get him. To be worth what they gave up, he's going to need to be a virtual god.

If he's just good, it's a bad trade, but still a good acquisition results wise.

If he does indeed go Jeff George though - which is a possibility - it's a disaster.

I think far too much emphasis, both media and otherwise, is placed on 1st round draft picks.

The circus it has become is ridiculous.

And the money being paid to totally unproven talent is an achilles heel.

I don't think 2 #1s for a QB is as big a deal as people make it out to be. Honestly. I think Cutler has enough on the resume to make it a very safe bet.

I actually kind of agree. Two firsts for a bonafide franchise QB isn't too shabby. It also makes sense because he is going to a team that doesn't have many holes, so they certainly aren't in a rebuilding mode. Get him a stud WR and I think you've got yourselves a deep playoff team.

People who say it is too much are underestimating the difference that a player like Cutler can make to an offense.

The added bonus is the upfront, cap killing, guaranteed money for a 1st round franchise QB, + development time under Shanahan, has already been done for the Bears. The guy will be making less than 2 of our mediocre CB's.

For the most important position on the field.

Mostly I only hear "TOO MUCH" from fans of teams looking for a QB.

Funny that.

I didn't want Cutler here (on record as saying so).

As far as the Bears, given their QB issues, I applaud them in general for making the move to get him, but I think the price was too high. I wouldn't have given up what the Bears did to get anyone short of Peyton Manning or Tom Brady (and even then I'd be iffy).

For the record, I put Lovie Smith in the category right now of a good coach who's still learning. He's not arrived yet, but he's got great character and likability and he could get to elite status if he continues to learn from his mistakes.

(for reference sake, another coach I put in the "potentially great but still learning the craft" category is a fellow by the name of John Fox)

Jerry Angelo as a GM? Him I'm not quite as sure about (and I think a fair number of Bear fans are in the same boat). He's made some good moves, but has pulled some boners too. Truth be told, the outcome of the Cutler deal may well make or break his reputation as a GM.

For every 1st round pick that becomes a successful NFL player, there are probably 6-10 that do not. For every 1st round QB that becomes a successful NFL player, there are probably 15-20 that do not. First round picks are the highest risk picks available, the most expensive investment in an unknown commodity. The Bears converted those high risk, high cost picks into a known commodity. A proven commodity.

You can keep your Vince Young/Jamarcus Russell/Ryan Leaf/Tim Couch/Joey Harrison et al high risk, no reward 1st round draft picks, Mr. Scot. Let me know how they work out for you
