Sherrod Martin

Sherrod has always been the following:

a.) a great athlete

b.) a guy who makes plays in the seconday when in the right position (same can NOT be said for Nakamura)

c.) a hard hitter (when he is in place for the tackle)

things Sherrod has been consistently bad at:

a.) bad.tackling.angles. can't tell you how many long runs have been given up because Sherrod takes a horrible angle to tackle the back- I kind of see why we originally projected him as a better corner, he is much better making plays on the ball in the air versus runners on the ground

b.) out of position- I don't know if this is from laziness in not learning the playbook properly or he just can't handle the responsibilities of an NFL safety. Either way he was out of position a LOT in 2011.

Essentially, our F.O. said we're going to bring in some competition of Nakamura who is a smart football player, good special teamer, is usually in the right position, and plays like a safety when taking an angle for a tackle. Unfortunately, Nakamura is not talented nor athletic enough to play for long stretches in this league as a starter.

Conclusion: FS is still a high need.

Edit: forgot to even mention the game tonight, Sherrod, other than the very long run, played really well tonight and SHOULD be our starter from here on out. We know for certain Nakamura isn't the future at this position, time to see if Sherrod is worth keeping from here on out.

Even without the ST play, he played well tonight. People hating on him for not making the two picks, come the fug on. Like I said in the other thread, if it had been Nakamura the passes would have been completions. He made one mistake, less than perfect angle on the long run (didn't look like he would have gotten him anyway unless he had been playing Nakamura style, 40 yards deep) and the rest of the game he was making good tackles all night long. He deserves praise for this game, he played well. Not perfect, but well.

He was in position a LOT on November 26th, 2012, and making great tackles. I don't argue FS is still a big need, but he's played infinitely better this year than Nakamura or himself last year.
