Somebody metioned blue law. I rem those. But going back to that would bea win for something *cough* conservative.

While we are at. Let's just work 30 hours a week. Why stop there? How bout just 1 day? This will give people more time to go back to school and learn more so they too can use all that knowledge for just one day.

Certainly- most European countries work 4-day weeks (4- 10 hour shifts) and get anywhere from 3-6 weeks vacation per year...paid.

Oh yeah, they also have socialized medicine and are, for the most part, technologically and financially far more secure than we are right now. Manufacturing they are light years ahead of this country and maybe all of that has something to do with the way they treat their workers.....

Are you kidding me? Have you checked out the European economy lately? It is far worse than ours.

Technologically more secure? Europeans? What a joke. We subsidize drug and tech research for the majority if the world.

Want to live in a European country, buy a ticket and leave.

I love it when people gave no idea what they are talking about.

When you say "We" I'm assuming you're talking about all the European based drug companies that have facilities here.

And when you mention "tech research" I'm again thinking you're talking about all the far eastern technology we buy....

Just exactly what do you believe it is the Americans make in this country?

And the European economy, while not immune to what happens in this country, sure haven't been dealing with the recession in any way, shape or form as bad as ours. Now I know you'll probably trot out Greece as the validation to your argument, but just stop before you do...just stop...

I love it when people assume they know everything there is to know about a subject, but present nothing factual, relying instead upon opinion and conjecture.

Take a trip too Europe sometime, spend a few months, live and work within the economy, come back and talk to me....

Italy and Spain are also in bad shape.

I deal with International business and finance every day. The European economies are is the shitter right now. Spain, Italy, Greece, Ireland, France, etc. They are ALL in serious fiscal and economic problems.

Capital investment in this region has stagnated. We are seeing organic decline across the entire Eurooean region.

riots/protets in spain is more and more common.

once you let the horse out of the barn on working less hours or give the illusion something is free when it isn't, then it's almost impossible to get it back.

that's why no citizen in europe wants austerity.

if the best job you can get is at a walmart or any type of retail, that's on you. you know what comes with that. i'm the king of leisure and totally believe in down time and having time for family or just to reboot. but ya gotta hustle and move up to get the vacation or pay you want. nobody is going to just hand it to you.

Lots of folks work on holidays besides big box employees and you dont see them whining about it.

Exactly, I worked at the hospital for 3 yrs, guess what? there isn't such thing as a hospital closing.... work happens everyday. People need to stop whining and do their jobs. If they don't like it then they need to quit or find a job that closes for holidays like the post offfice

The French economy is still growing...sure that doesn't mean it is doing stellar, but it doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the others.

Germany and France are carrying the EU right now.

France's government just cuts hours when unemployment increases. They forced employers to cut hours to 32 per week and hire another person for each existing 4 jobs...all while not changing salaries.

Worked every holiday since I was 15.

Don't give a poo. Find a new job or find a way to request it off. But realize, people will work and it will be because of you. People usually get paid more on holidays too.

People who don't want to work but want to go home and use their electricity, use their water, watch TV with people...having fireman or police on hand, teh trucker who brought in their Turkey is probabably still on the road.. All those things take people working on Thanksgiving.

So people should stop bitching and work around it and remember how you should be thankful for what you do have, including your job. People are so dramatic, I just bought all my thanksgiving poo on sale, with no crowds and am having my Thanksgiving on Sunday night with more football with leftovers for the Panther game on Monday. A day is just a day you can still have Thanksgiving.

I feel the same way for any holiday that isn't religious for people.

I'm sure some of the Target employees were protesting so they could stay home and watch the football games yesterday.

Oh, the facilities management crew and concession stand employees at the stadiums didn't want to go to work on Thanksgiving either? Tough, I want to watch my football!

If they don't want to work, I'll do it. Could use a few extra bucks to make ends meet this month.

If wasn't sick, I'd work as well. Single, no family here, between GF's. It ought to be employees who feel like Jase and I do work from whenever Thanksgiving evening to some ungodly hour of the morning.

With this economy, they ought to be thankfull they have a job. Back when I was in highschool, I worked at a grocery store. I had to work from 8AM-4PM every Thanksgiving. (The only time we were closed was Christmas day.) My Mom was actually happy that she didn't have to get up at 4AM to put the turkey in!
