Bwood's Final Mock Draft till the Combine.

Gannt was tweeting saying if we was the GM he would draft two straight o-lineman and that would solve many of the problems. I kinda like the idea except for the fact we need to address the secondary and the defensive tackle position pretty badly

I'd love to get a combo like Joeckel and Barrett Jones. I really think we need to get one of the top 5 receivers though, between Hunter, Rodgers, Patterson, Patton, and Williams we should be able to find a future #1 receiver.

Joeckel and either Warmack (not possible unless we pull some kind of massive trade-up) or Dallas Thomas (who I think is the second best G in the draft). Our running game (assuming we get a competent OC) would instantly be dominant.

I think Patterson is going to be a stud as well but I think that FS is a much bigger need at this point and with all the noise being made about the WR talent in this draft...the DB talent is being way undervalued.

Milliner, Amerson, Reid, Banks, Elam, Lester...All of those guys could start at FS for us tomorrow and I think passing on one of them in the 2nd would be a mistake. So if we have a top 5 pick I'd go Joekel/Elam in the 1st/2nd and sign a WR or TE in free agency to shore up that pass catching need. IMO Cam lost a huge target in Jeremy Shockey. I think he was a HUGE part of this offense. Way bigger than anyone in the organization would be willing to admit because we let him walk.

So if we don't sign Byrd in the offseason (which I don't see happening) then get the future starter at FS and go pass catcher in FA whether it's a TE or a WR:

Dwayne Bowe

Dustin Keller

Wes Welker

Delanie Walker

I would welcome all of those guys (obviously some more talented than others) to this team and I think they would all pay huge dividends as options for Newton.

The problem with the names you mentioned as FS candidates is that the only ones you named that will be available are Elam and Lester.

Both of those guys are strong safeties and would not translate well moving to free safety.

I have a feeling we will score on someone in free agency like we did with Dwan Edwards, except at safety.

We will not be bringing in many big name guys, trust me.

First..I wouldn't be surprised at all if Amerson was there in the 2nd round (he's an ideal skillset for FS). Secondly..Matt Elam can't play FS? The guy is 5'10'' 202, ran a 4.42 forty, and plays against SEC receivers every week. What aspect of his game have you seen that makes you think he can't play free safety?

You know it's not that he can't play free safety, it's that I want to draft a guy that has been in that spot while in college. Elam is very versatile and athletic, don't get me wrong, I think that will eventually bump him into the first round. Lester is the guy I have no confidence in succeeding at the next level.

Amerson very well could be a solid FS at the next level, but once again the position change makes me uncomfortable. I think Amerson will be a late first round pick no doubt though.

Call me crazy but I really dislike this years safety class, though there are some really intriguing prospects in the later rounds that could be dimes after playing a couple seasons as back up.

Ty Zimmerman and Zeke Motta (both white DB'S lol) are the kind of guys I want playing safety for us, both guys can be had in the 4th or 5th round.

I don't mind the draft, especially if we can sign Byrd, but I couldn't disagree with your opinion about DTs more. DT is a big money, important position and to get a GOOD FA, we'd have to spend a lot of money. DT is like QB, LT, DE in that it's better to draft your own talent than trying to buy it because you almost never get what you pay for when trying to bring in long term talent. And I'm sick as hell of bringing in bottom tier scrub DTs, D. Edwards being the closest thing to an exception (yes, I really like him but he's not a long term solution.)

You might get what you pay for if you don't overpay as Carolina always does. I think you get a free agent DT because they are less likely to bust. A guy like Alan branch would be a perfect 4-5 yr solution.
