A different way to interpret QB statistics

Stats are nice but they overlook the most important thing a QB must have: leadership
i can agree with this.

a good QB makes the team around him better and doesn't necessarily carry the team on his back stat-wise.

When he is ranked 17th all time, out of how many QBs? Thousands? 7th out of what 40-45?...doesn't seem out of place. But whatever, haters gotta hate. It's the only way you and your kind can feel important and special....

true but it is a chicken/egg scenario. You cannot effectively lead without example no matter how loud or friendly you are. So can you really rally troops if they don't believe you have what it takes or can you actually motivate the real talent by giving maximum effort no matter how effective it actually is?

The leader needs to be the QB and he needs to be intense but he cannot be all smoke either. Maybe the team feels Jake is doing just good enough to keep their faith and listen. I hope so. It will get real ugly if they don't due to another performance like the three duds last year early in the season.

one thing i keep thinking about is the timing of those duds and a comment kirwan made about jake's last game.

kirwan said on sirius(?) radio a few weeks after that last game that jake was told to not throw during that week off leading into the playoff game. now if that was true, did that have in adverse effect on his throwing? that is what kirwan implied if i'm not mistaken.

also, if it is true that he was told to not throw during that week, would he have been told to not throw during the week 9 bye? what happened the next two weeks? oakland and detroit. oakland was just ugly and detroit....he only had 19 attempts. was the reason for that his arm being stiff form taking a week off? he's still recovering from a surgery that takes most people who have it 2 years to get back to pre-injury form (only one year is considered rehab). For most people rehab takes a full year. the surgery took place just over a year before that bye week.

of course all this is speculation and something i would love for one of our beat reporters to find out. obviously jake was healed enough to come back and be competitive last year, but was he and his arm at 100%? he said it wasn't hurting him, which may be the case, but was his arm back to pre-injury shape?

we'll find out this year if that was the reason.

also, not to get back on topic or anything, Big Ben is underrated by this statistic/score. 17 does not reflect how good he is, or what he means to his team, and is much better than most of the guys in front of him.

here is something people WONT WANT TO HEAR.

If Delhomme can get a SB under his belt, with his career stats and 4th quarter comebacks and previous SB performance he MIGHT have a chance to go into the HALL OF FAME some time in my lifetime.

Maybe about 15 years from now.....

thats considering him playing at least 3 more years and getting a SB- I think he would need a SB MVP to help as well.

lol aren't you precious?

Actually what the team saw early in the season was Jake leading a last second comeback against San Diego to win. Then he followed that us with a 4th quarterback comeback to beat Chicago so we opened up 2-0 without Smitty.

Sure he had some bad games but we won 12 of 16 in 2008 after winning only 5 of 13 games in 2007 after he went down.

The team doesn't feel he is just doing enough, they feel he is doing very well and is their leader. Since the beginning of 2007 the team has gone 14-5 with him while without him we have gone 5-8. They saw Jake come through big time all year long. So they can forgive him for the poor playoff experience.

What player has criticized him in any interview since the playoff game. I can't find one. The only guys criticizing him are fans and the media.

Don't assume your opinion is even remotely close to what the team thinks about him. They aren't saying good things because they are PC, they are saying it because they believe in him and see his effort and leadership every day in practice and on Sunday in the games. It will take more than a few bad games to change that.
