Breaking down the Panthers offensive performance(article)

Only problem I had with that article is it states early on that in Week 10 (vs Denver) we abandoned the read-option. I still feel I saw more of it and shotgun plays than I wanted to.

The shotgun formation does not mean option.

...but is Cam regressing because of the system and playcalling, or is the system and playcalling regressing because of Cam?

I think that Chud tried to get tricky and changed what we were doing last year and it backfired, and now that the O line is hurt and playing poorly, it's affecting Cam more and more, and now it's a feedback loop of crappiness.

the system and the playcalling is causing everyone to regress.

how long does it take for plays to develop? how dependent are we on the big pass downfield? how easy is it to defend (with defenses knowing what to expect)? how much work does it take for an OLine to keep cam protected for the amount of time needed for plays to develop?

i think the players are under-performing, but the biggest problem is that the play-calling has put the team in a hole.

chud is just SURE that his intellect will win out. i mean it made him the hottest OC in the league last year. rivera is just sure that chud knows what he's doing.

you've got to do what works. not what has worked in the past, but what works now. if what you're doing doesn't work, it should be scrapped, regardless of how "proven" it is. that was the problem we had with fox. seems like rivera and co. picked right up where fox left off. just as stubborn and unwilling to admit that what you're doing isn't working and make the needed adjustments.

Hence the word "and". We were in shotgun about 70% of plays... caused all sorts of problems. the one good drive we had we ran a good amount of plays under center, then decided that was a dumb idea and went back to getting our QB mushed into guacamole.

If Chud doesn't think Newton can audiblize at the line then why was he allowed to do it with great success last year? Seems he would only get better reading defenses with time so if he has success last year, he would get better this year. Instead Chud has handcuffed him as if he resents that Cam might change one of his plays.

Makes no sense

I can not understand this need to defend Chud and his bad play calling. He has coached this year for more about his future then Cam or this team. He has been totally disconnected from his personal. How you have 90 mil in your backfield and not use them is a crazy. Not to mention this has happened before with Chud. See 2007- 2009 Cleveland Browns.

It changed sometime early this year. I posted in another thread that I happened to be watching the first part of our Tampa game this year, and Cam audibled on the 3rd play of the 1st offensive series. It's safe to assume that wasn't the last time, but at some point, he was apparently told to stop.

agreed.

a bit off topic, but this is one area that i found was very interesting when compared to chip kelly's offense.

The Ducks use plenty of their superfast tempo, but they actually have three settings: red light (slow, quarterback looks to sideline for guidance while the coach can signal in a new play), yellow light (medium speed, quarterback calls the play and can make his own audibles at the line, including various check-with-me plays), and green light (superfast).
i know that most OCs will allow their QB that freedom. it just makes sense to do that.

for chud to allow that last year but not this year only shows the height of his arrogance.
